In the Just Wood Premier Division the advantage has been given to Swad SC A as the other contenders battled out a draw. Swad put in a stella performance and collected 8pts from Swad Cons A. The breaks are starting to improve as we approach the midpoint of the season and at Swad it was Rob Chambers that showed his break building ability with a 55 and two frames off Kev Dixon. Swad Cons have a talented side but slowly came unstuck as Darren Noble and John Chambers punished the visitors. Surprisingly the Con’s Dave Clark took their only frame against the inform Mark Sherratt and so end his unbeaten run of 9 games. Another highlight of the week was the 75 break from Willington A’s Gary Barker. This is some achievement as the table has tight pockets and so the potting has to be more accurate to avoid the jaws. In his second frame he also pumped in breaks of 35 and a 34 clearance giving Newhall A’s Steve Wilson no chance. Jan Pawlazych got two with Shane Reeves and Bill Stewart taking one a piece. At Belvedere Park A it was a must win match for both sides. Burton Cons A had the slower start as Ryan Gilmore and Craig Keen (48 break) put the home side 3-1 up, but Jonathan Fletcher levelled the match by beating Alan Davies and so the pressure was on the last game between Daz Lester and Stuart Roberts. Roberts won the first and he potted the final black in the second but he had to agonise as the he watched the white go round the table and drop into the pocket, giving Belvedere an equal share of the points. Burton Cons B won their second match of the season against Ivanhoe B. Tim Hodgkinson dropped both to Gaz Dolman and the Cons hit back with two from Zaheer Husain. Mitch Hughes and Graham Measures couldn’t be separated, and it was Shaun Golding that secured the Cons victory with two off Darren Wilson. Spot On A played out a tight match at Rolleston A. The match hinged on Rolleston’s Kev Norris needing to get all of his frames for the draw. This was always going to be difficult against a player of Steve Gaunt’s standard and they took one each giving Spot On the match win. Belmont A turned out a good side and deserved the win against Swad SC B, although the match was closer than the score suggests. Steve Burton took his first on the final black and had to work hard for his second against Matt Morgan. Ian Archer and Dave Budworth shared a marathon match as Kev Elkin took his first easily on table 2. With the draw guaranteed Belmont relaxed and Brian Alford took Elkin down to the blue before losing. In the final game both players were far from their best. Bill Davidson took the first but he lost the will to live in the second and Andy Straw mopped up the final balls. In Presidents Division 1 Woodville WMC A put in another five star performance. Paul Smith took Stapenhill A’s frames to level at 2-2 after Mark Satchwell had won with breaks of 48 and 36. This sparked a good team effort and Martin Smith and Simon Smith finished off in style. Swad SC C still managed to close on Woodville by destroying Drakelow A. John Davis hit a 34 break and took two along with Chris Dewey and Steve Ayre but Geoff Pritchard had to settle for a draw as Jim Marcer took Drakelow’s frame. Burton Cons C played Belmont B and both are in the promotion hunt. Steve Hathaway compiled a 45 break in his draw with Shaun Gebbie but Mark Vaughan gave Belmont the upper hand by defeating David Shipton. The second half was a carbon copy of the first with Joe Ellis and Pete Birkin halving the game as Tom Eggington won both against Paul Twigg. The only whitewash victory came at Swadlincote when Swad SC D was not able to handle Belvedere Park B. John Sheriff, Neil Swindale, Tim Knopik and Chris Gould were all on cue and this can only improve Belvedere’s confidence and they can now attack the Tutbury and Stapenhill teams to avoid relegation. Stapenhill B could not better their league position as they sank to Ivanhoe C. It was a closely fought match with all players drawing except Tony Davey who took the win for the Ashby side. Tutbury A and B have been neck and neck for some weeks. The B team now have a 9pt advantage over their stable mates thanks to Mark Press’ win over Dave Powell. In Furniture King Division 2 Swad SC E were up against their F team. Adam Harrison pieced together a 39 break but unfortunately the match ended all square, benefiting neither team. Ivanhoe D however are settling back into their winning ways, this time at Swad SC G. Again it was the match play of Matt Gray and Dave Watson that did the damage with Paul Wileman taking the winner from Mark Hadley. Swad Cons B have made the life of struggling Burton Cons D a little harder thanks to Bob Birch and Chris Vernon’s contribution plus the odd frame taken by Ron Barnett in his shared match with the returning Mick Hickebottom. The Newhall B and C match looked on paper like a draw but that wasn’t in the script for the B team. They pressed home frame after frame with John Laud dropping the final frame to Andy Rice. Bottom of the table clash between Alrewas A and Swad Cons C went down to the wire. Alrewas were nearly home and dry as Collins and Sharpe took the first four, but the Cons dug deep with Graham Leech taking two and Jordan Iliffe getting his first. At this point Alrewas held their nerve and Will Sherratt took the frame for the team win. In David Wain Insurance Division 3 it was the turn of the leading teams to make a play for the coveted top spot. Two points separated Stapenhill D and John Carr D and as expected no quarter was given. The match went down to the very last frame which dropped onto John Carr’s side of the fence. Belmont C were handed victory when Rolleston B could only produce three players. The match went to 3-3 before Doug Lees was left to claim the final two. Willington B is enjoying their first season in the league and is also gaining confidence. They were put on the back foot when they visited Newhall D and Dan Jackson and Ken Bailey took three out of four. Newhall then managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory as Steve Oakey and Mick Stubbs rolled over for Lee Cooke and Kevin Bradley. Woodville S&S A are blowing hot and cold. This time it was hot when they travelled to John Carr C and only dropped one frame. Greg Nicholl, Jim Gardner and Luke Hudson were all on form with Ben Woodward splitting the frames with Gordon Jennings. Swad Cons D were out played by Rolleston C. Man of the match Anthony Rushton played superbly and in his first frame made breaks of 40 and 30. Dave Bentley and Alex Smith followed suit with two each. Only Daniel Fenwick took frames for the Cons.
