2006-07: Week 15

BURTON AND DISTRICT CLUBS SNOOKER LEAGUE REPORT BY DAVE BUDWORTH In the Just Wood Premier Division Swad SC A have racked up 100pts but are not being allowed to relax as Belvedere Park A and Burton Cons A have slightly better wins. Ivanhoe A hosted the match against Swad and started well with George Cawkwell having the run of the ball and beating Ian Mellor. Unfortunately for Ivanhoe Richard Bithell was unable to contain John Chambers who compiled a 52 break in his win. Barry Fieldsend should have taken his first but went in-off the final blue leaving Rob Chambers to clear up. This obviously inspired him and he continued by knocking in a 40 and 30 break. The final games between Tony Eyre and Darren Noble ended all square. Belvedere Park A was happy with their win over Willington A and admitted that the match was closer than the 6-2 score-line suggests. Craig Keen was in fine form and dominated the game with Brian Perriera, but the match between Alan Davies and Wayne Perriera was destined to drag on as the black sat in the jaws of the pocket and then became surrounded by reds. The next frame consisted of a fantastic safety exchange which culminated in a final black respot. Perriera took the pot on but hadn’t accounted for the in-off. Ryan Gilmore was struggling on the night and was no match for Jan Pawlazych’s steady cueing, although he did manage to take the second frame down to the black before Jan finished off with a top quality pot. Owen Jones had to play well in both frames to defeat the talented Bill Stewart. Burton Cons A repeated their week 2 result against Rolleston A. Stuart Roberts and Jonathan Fletcher were solid and prevented Andy Winson and Rob Sanders from getting any frames on the board. Mick Simpkins and Mat Milnes shared the spoils with Kev Norris and Danny Thomson respectively. Swad Cons A have put in another stella performance to take the win from Spot On A. In an otherwise drawn match it was Mick Abbott that struck gold with a win over John Hardy. Newhall A was expecting a tough match against Ivanhoe B but the visitors only produced three players. Martin Hicks secured both frames after Fran McNulty and Ady McDonnell had taken one each. This left Steve Wilson to claim two frames for the team win. Burton Cons B inflicted Swad SC B’s 8th consecutive defeat. Tim Hodgkinson and Zaheer Hussain potted their opposition off the table and Mitch Hughes closed out his first frame with a 33 break. In Presidents Division 1 Woodville WMC A was up against Tutbury A who are playing with more confidence after last weeks win. This made all the difference and each player took a frame except for Dave Mabbott who took the Tutters winner against Mark Satchwell. The highlight was the new division high break of 57 set by Phil Wright. Swad SC C’s Chris Dewey compiled a 41 break in his halved game with Stapenhill B’s Mick Comley as Steve Ayre and Ivor Rees also shared the frames on table 2. John Davis then gave Swad the advantage with both against Mark Parry but Stapenhill hit back with Nathan Clarke’s win over Mark Swift. Ivanhoe C closed the gap on the leaders by taking the win against Tutbury B. All the games finished in a draw except for the two taken by Steve Cockeram. Russ Banner took the highest break of the match with a 30 contribution. John Carr SBK A beat Burton Cons C thanks to the win by Denis Ganley against Tom Eggington. A great effort considering the Cons had been tipped for a top three finish. Stapenhill A got the best result of the week with a 7-1 over Swad SC D. Only Swad’s Bob McNulty produced a winning frame against Carl Jeffcoate as Dave Shenton, Paul Smith and Rob Kent all played to a higher level. Belmont B’s Mark Vaughan stood out from the rest with a 34 break and two frames taken from Belvedere Park B’s Neil Swindale. Pete Birkin was fresh out of his hospital bed and was unable to stop John Sheriff from getting the first but he upped his game and took the next easily. Shaun Gebbie and Paul Twigg also took one each against Tim Knopik and Chris Gould. In Furniture King Division 2 Swad SC F and Measham WMC A are sweeping aside the challengers. Swad’s Adam Harrison and Ben Davies put Newhall SC C on the back foot with 3 out of 4 frames and Peter Maguire battled out a win against David Wain. Rob Press took Newhall’s initial frame and Andy Rice made it a respectable finish, taking the last two from Peter Maguire Jnr. Alan Jowett and Chris Vernon gave Swad Cons their points at Measham sharing with David Rushton and Chris Stone respectively. Measham’s skipper Paul Eaton and Paul Boyle dispatched Ron Barnett and Bob Birch to keep them hot on Swad’s heels. Ivanhoe D had to split the points with Newhall SC B after they had made the better start. Dave Watson (31 break) saw off Keith Pantall as Brendon Matley and John Laud took one a piece. Stuart Tagg got the fourth frame but couldn’t get the winner. Newhall’s Mick Kirkland levelled with Tagg as Paul Lock turned the match into a draw. Alrewas B have been having good results this season but were unable to overhaul Swad SC E. Only Micky Morris took two frames along with a 36 break. Tony Truman halved with Tony Mitchell but Andy Jefferies and Phil Maddocks tilted the balance in Swad’s favour. Burton Cons D look like going down a division after the bottom of the table clash with John Carr SBK B. Steve Pearsall, Graham Smith and Dan Pearsall gave John Carr the winning edge. It was Pat Finnegan and Ray Plummer that made sure the Cons got something out of the fixture. Swad SC G and Alrewas A swap places in the table. Nick Collins and Will Sherratt saw off the normally strong match play of Mark Hadley and Simon Mansfield with John Sharpe taking the decider off Simon Nettle. In David Wain Insurance Division 3 John Carr SBK D was up against the talent of Rolleston D. Mick Baxter and Mark King put the home side 3-1 up and this was followed by Martin Beard defeating the excellent potting of Dean Parker. Fortunately for John Carr the match was already won before Gary Chambers had lost his second frame on the black. The top two places are almost decided, although which way round is yet to be seen. Stapenhill D comfortably cast aside the challenge of Newhall D with John Richardson and Robert McMeechan both hitting 28 breaks. Dan Jackson and Mick Stubbs took one each to account for Newhall’s points. Rolleston C’s Anthony Rushton hit home with two frames against Stapenhill C’s Simon Piechowicz as the rest drew to get themselves back on level terms with their D team. Willington B were starting to gain ground on the Rolleston teams but this week had no answers to Woodville S&S A. Only Lee Cooke put Willington on the map as Woodville’s Ben Woodward, Greg Nicholl and Jim Gardner all took full advantage. Belmont C waited until the last game against Swad Cons D to grab the winner, Doug Lees getting the better of Kev Starkey. John Carr SBK C made it 100% for the club this week by seeing off Rolleston B. Gordon Jennings and Steve Atkin gave the team the best possible start and John Smout and Kev Broomfield finished it with one each.
