2006-07: Week 18

In the Just Wood Premier Division Swad SC A was up against a tough side in Willington A and got off to a slow start with Gary Barker and Jan Pawlazych taking three out of the first four. This clearly put Swad into attack mode and they finished off with a run of four frames of their own for the win. The highlight of the evening was the new high break of 83 by Mark Sherratt. Spot On A held Burton Cons A to a draw in every game on the night and showed just what a quality side they have. This will probably have pleased Belvedere Park A, who are back to within two points of the Cons after seeing off Burton Cons B Rolleston A is having a good season and also held their opposition at 4-4. Belmont A were out of the blocks quickly as Steve Burton and Kev Elkin took three between them. Ian Archer then added the fourth but Rob Sanders hit home with Rolleston’s second and Danny Thomson cleared up to end all square. The Ivanhoe derby between A and B teams ended in favour of Ivanhoe B. A fair result as Gaz Dolman and Trevor Wilson had taken all their frames at the start. George Cawkwell and Barry Fieldsend fought hard for the draw but Graham Measures got the B team over the line. Swad Cons A got revenge against Swad SC B and as both teams seem resigned to relegation it will be a battle between them not to finish bottom of the division. In Presidents Division 1, the leaders have crept away from their main rivals for the title by killing off Stapenhill B. Mark Satchwell set the ball rolling with a 39 break and the rest of the team followed suit with consecutive frames. Mick Comley saved the day for Stapenhill and took the sympathy point. Swad SC C has been slowly closing in on the leaders but this week came up against Belmont B who really should be higher up the table. Rich Goldby and Mark Vaughan kept Swad in check and Shaun Gebbie put in a top draw performance to give Belmont a chance of the win. Unfortunately, Paul Twigg could not prevent the in-form Chris Dewey from giving Swad an equal share of the points. John Carr A put in a good performance last week for a draw but this week have been well beaten by Ivanhoe C. Steve Cockeram and Warner Collins started in fine form to guarantee the draw and Jason Collins and Dave Marriott followed up with one each against Dennis Ganley and Dave Plunkett respectively. Tutbury A visited Burton Cons C and gave themselves a chance at promotion. Wins from Dave Powell, Brian Holmes and Steve Mabbott claimed the points for the Tutters. Belvedere Park B just failed to get over the winning line against Stapenhill A. Neil Swindale and John Sheriff took one each out of Rob Kent and Paul Smith. Chris Gould then put the home side 4-2 up but Carl Jeffcoate came to Stapenhill’s rescue for the draw. Swad SC D and Drakelow A both face relegation this season. The current formbook would favour Drakelow but as the result shows, nothing can be guaranteed in this game. Brian Bloor and Andrew Bloor gave Swad the best possible start but Simon Orpwood hit back for the visitors. Tony Coleman’s magic cue could only win one frame against Garton Bloor giving the home side victory. In Furniture King Division 2 Swad SC F had to struggle against stable mates Swad SC G. Adam Harrison made the difference in an otherwise drawn match. Measham WMC A has been in hot pursuit of the leader but this week was unable to dispatch Swad SC E. Andy Jefferies put in a winner’s performance as all others took one each. Ivanhoe D was an early runner for promotion but this week’s draw with John Carr B has done them no favours. The next match against the leaders will be make or break for a top three finish. Swad Cons C fancied their chances of a win after going 4-2 up thanks to Graham Leech, Ian Jardine and Frank Travena but Micky Morris assumed his normal anchorman role to square the match. Newhall C took valuable points against Burton Cons D. David Wain and Rob Press won the first three as Callum Finnegan and Paul Davies replied to get on level terms. Andy Rice then took the win by getting the better of Ray Plummer. Alrewas A overpowered Swad Cons B and with games in hand looks good to get away from the drop zone. In David Wain Insurance Division 3 John Carr D scraped a win due to Mick Baxter taking the only two framer of the evening against Woodville S&S A. Stapenhill D pushed aside their C team in an effort to stay in touch with John Carr. Rob McMeechan knocking in a 36 break in the teams 6-2 win. Willington B was in no mood to make Rolleston C’s passage into division 2 easy. Paul Wilson, Lee Cooke and Kev Bradley completed the home win. This week’s whitewash victory by Rolleston D and will keep the C team honest for the rest of the season. Swad Cons D had no answers to the play of Gary Mayne, Dean Parker, Adam Farrington and Paul Fox. John Carr C picked up their third win this season against Belmont C. As all games played out as draws, John Smout did the business by taking both of Doug Lees. Competition Draw Evershed Vase (ATA) Semi-final – best of 3 – On 5th March 07 S. Orpwood v M. Sherratt S.
