2006-07: Week 19

BURTON AND DISTRICT CLUBS SNOOKER LEAGUE REPORT BY DAVE BUDWORTH In the Just Wood Premier Division, Burton Cons A put in a near perfect performance to see off Swad Cons A. Jonathan Fletcher (40 break), Stuart Roberts and Mat Milnes were all on cue whilst Mick Simpkins shared the honours with Swad’s Dave Clark. Belvedere Park A also looked like taking a big win on their home tables, against Ivanhoe B. Owen Jones had put in his season best performance, including a 39 break, at the same time as Craig Keen was putting paid to his opponent. Ivanhoe then started a fight back with Trevor Wilson and Gaz Dolman. Dolman took his first with a 51 break and backed it up with an easy second win. On the other table, Wilson stunned Alan Davies but was unable to hold on for the draw as Davies hit back for the team win. Spot On A and Willington A both desire fourth spot with Spot On having the points advantage. They visited Ivanhoe A where John Hardy and Steve Gaunt took three out of four and Tony Clements completed the win. Willington A had a better win against Rolleston A although it was a hard fought encounter and only dropped one frame in each half. Swad SC B were unlucky not to get a draw against Newhall A. Lee Sherratt was the only player to notch up a win which his team claim to be a rarity. Best performance went to Matt Morgan for compiling a 44 break. Belmont A and Burton Cons B ended all square. The match could have gone either way and depended upon the last match between Steve Burton and Mitch Hughes. Hughes took the first with a superb 50 break but Burton put together an amazing fight-back for the second In Presidents Division 1, Woodville WMC A has the bit between their teeth and will have to do something stupid to let the lead slip. This week they dispatched Ivanhoe C who is doing well this season by only dropping one frame. Main rivals Swad SC C was shown the door by Tutbury B. Chris Dewey hit a 34 but Mark Press responded with two breaks of 25 in scrappy frames and this set the tone for the match. Russ Banner and Lee Causer both got the better of Swad with Steve Ayre picking up their points. Tutbury A has gone from mid table to battling for promotion. Dave Mabbott and Swad SC D’s Andrew Bloor won their matches to set up a tense second half. Brian Holmes and Dave Powell guaranteed the Tutters a draw but Rob McNulty pipped Powell to the next frame. In a tight final frame, Holmes came out on top by potting the final black. Stapenhill A’s Dave Shenton (54 break) and Rob Kent took full advantage of Belmont B but only just crept over the line after Mark Vaughan and Shaun Gebbie had taken the next three. Carl Jeffcoate snatched the Stapenhill winner. Drakelow A grabbed the final frame for a draw with Stapenhill B. Tony Colman found himself 30 points adrift but after some good safety took the frame on the blue. John Carr A is going to struggle to stay in the division after losing heavily to Belvedere Park B who also has a game in hand. Neil Swindale, John Sheriff and Tim Knopik made sure of the win as Chris Gould and Dave Plunkett shared the final frame. In Furniture King Division 2, Ivanhoe D tried to get the better of leaders Swad SC F. Unfortunately for Ivanhoe Adam Harrison took his frames in an otherwise drawn match. Measham WMC A put in a stella performance against John Carr B. Breaks of 32 and 30 from Paul Bradley and Paul Eaton respectively show that they are in good form. Graham Smith saved John Carr from the whitewash. Swad SC E stays in the promotion hunt by beating Swad Cons B in the final match. Phil Maddocks was the only player to pick up a win. Alrewas A has moved up the division by playing a rearranged match and defeating Newhall B. Newhall C narrowly overcame Alrewas B to get to within 1pt with a game to play. Alrewas consider themselves unlucky as Tony Truman lost both his frames on black and pink. Swad SC G is moving in the wrong direction and this week lost out to Swad Cons C. Graham Leech and Frank Travena put the Cons four up leaving Jordan Iliffe to pick up the winner. In David Wain Insurance Division 3, Stapenhill D closed in on John Carr D by beating Woodville S&S A. John Richardson and Karl Hancox took all their frames and Rob McMeechan and Colin Wood finished off with one a piece. Rolleston D are looking good in third and had no trouble taking the win against Newhall D. They cannot relax as Belmont C and Rolleston C could both spring a late attack. Belmont C was victorious over Stapenhill C with some good potting from Jim Parkes and Gaz Ward. Swad Cons D lost out to John Carr C and remains just 2pts above Newhall.
