2006-07: Week 2

After a slow start last week Swad SC A has found great form. Ivanhoe A were the visitors and with the first match drawn between Rob Chambers and George Cawkwell, Ivanhoe thought they stood a chance of a good result. Unfortunately they lost the remainder of the frames, although the highlight was Mark Sherratt’s breaks of 46, 50 and 61 in his win over Tony Eyre to send Ivanhoe home with just 1pt.

Burton Cons A travelled to Rolleston A and maintained their 100% record. Only Danny Thomson and Anthony Rushton won a frame a piece for Rolleston as the Cons Stuart Roberts and Jonathan Fletcher took all frames.

Burton Cons B got off to a flyer when Tim Hodgkinson (32 break) and Zaheer Hussain (40 break) put Burton 4 up over Swad SC B. Looking defeat in the face Swad then produced some solid snooker as Matt Morgan and Brian Alford mirrored the first half for a draw.

Spot On A played their first match of the season after sitting out last week. Swad Cons A wanted to improve on the last match draw but could only supply 3 players. This proved to be the Cons downfall as all 3 games were drawn leaving Tony Clements to claim the unplayed game for the win.

Ivanhoe B hosted the Newhall A match and proved yet again that visitors will find it hard to win at the Ivanhoe fortress. Newhall arrived one player short but this made no difference as the match was already in Ivanhoe’s pocket.

In Division 1 Woodville WMC A have strengthened an already excellent team with the introduction of Phil Wright. They made short work of Tutbury A as only Dave Mabbott could take a frame off Woodville’s Simon Smith. Tutbury had nothing but praise for the visitors and believe they will run away with the division.

Belmont B also has an eye on the top of the division and Captain Mark Vaughan kept his team in touch with Woodville by taking his team to a second successive win.

Burton Cons C is having a good start to the season with 2 out of 2. This week they draughted in Mick Hickebottom who didn’t fail in the teams win over John Carr A. Joe Ellis is starting to produce some form too as he did maximum damage by taking both off Dennis Ganley.
Ivanhoe C reversed last weeks fortune by beating a struggling Tutbury B. Tody Davey and Jason Collins forced home the first four frames against Russ Banner and Greg Read respectively with Dave Marriott securing the win.

Stapenhill B halted Swad SC Cs start to the season. The difference on the night being Mark Parry who took both off Swad’s John Davies.

Swad SC D also suffered at the hands of a Stapenhill team. This time it was the A team. It was level at the half way stage and then Paul Smith put paid to a Swad revival by talking all frames off Bob McNulty.

In division 2 John Carr B have got themselves near to the top of the table with a good display of snooker over Burton Cons D. Graham Smith, Steve Pearsall and John Peto took the frames and it remained for the younger players to face each other. Luckily for the Cons Callum Finnegan shared the honours with Daniel Pearsall. Maybe it was the tips Nigel Bond gave Callum that saved the whitewash.

Swad SC F was facing defeat against Newhall C when all matches had been halved and Gordon Smith had taken his first for Newhall. In the second Peter Maguire Jnr waited until the end of the frame before he cleared from brown to pink and concluded with a difficult black along the cushion for the draw.

Division 3’s Stapenhill D has completed a good week for their club by putting themselves along side John Carr D, this time at the expense of Newhall D.

Rolleston B had a great match at John Carr C and came away victorious with Gordon Jennings saving John Carrs blushes by taking two off Joe Docksey. Rolleston have done themselves no favours though as last weeks card was posted late and so loose 2pts as per Rule 12.

New team Willington B have got to grips with the division and took their first win. Woodville S&S A were 4 down as Luke Hudson came to the table. He battled with Mick Fradley and took both but Kevin Bradley took the win for Willington on the other table.

Belmont C visited Swad Cons C but came away with long faces as Ahmed Vaughan lost two to Kev Starkey in an otherwise drawn match.

Please use this seasons match cards. They differ from last season by having a space that you can enter the order of play in and record high breaks next to each player. Old cards should be destroyed. You must use full names on the match cards. Please make sure your match cards reach Burton Cons by midday Monday to avoid a 2pt penalty.
