2006-07: Week 20

BURTON AND DISTRICT CLUBS SNOOKER LEAGUE REPORT BY DAVE BUDWORTH In the Just Wood Premier Division Swad SC A dominated Rolleston A and took all 9pts whilst nearest rivals Burton Cons A had to rearrange their match with Newhall and Belvedere Park A suffered at the hands of Spot On A. Burton Cons B put in a great effort to beat Willington A as Zaheer Hussain potted his way to a 37 break and Mitch Hughes a 30 break. This takes the Cons three places up the league table to fifth but with the game-in-hand situation will have to get similar results to stay there. Both Ivanhoe teams are now struggling as Belmont A took the win over the B team and Swad Cons beat the A team soundly to get off the bottom of the table. In Presidents Division 1, Woodville WMC A gave Belvedere Park B no chance as Swad SC C sat out the week’s matches. Simon Smith and Phil Wright did the damage with Mark Satchwell and Graham Bailey mopping up with one each against John Sherrif and Tim Knopik respectively. Tutbury B started well with Mark Press playing his old teammate Rob Kent and taking both including a 30 break. Russ Banner added one more in his hour and forty minute marathon with Paul Smith followed by Lee Causer taking both off the in form Dave Shenton. Roy Walker and Carl Jeffcoate shared the final frames. Ivanhoe C picked up the win against Drakelow A to stay in the promotion hunt by waiting until the last game for Warner Collins to take two off the normally solid Simon Orpwood. Tutbury A blew hot and cold against Stapenhill B. Dave Mabbott compiled a 53 break and took his frames but the team collapsed against the potting of Mark Parry and Ivor Rees. Mick Comley and Dave Powell shared the other games. Belmont B is in with an outside chance of promotion after dumping John Carr A. Rich Goldby and Mark Vaughan put the home side four up with Shaun Gebbie adding two more in the second half. Dave Plunkett took the John Carr points against the luckless Paul Twigg. Light sabres for all except Pete Birkin. It was good to see the tanned Mick Hickebottom back in action for Burton Cons C. They visited Swad SC D where Joe Ellis and Steve Hathaway took everything on offer and guaranteed the draw. Dave Shipton and Mick Hickebottom then put one each onto the final score. In Furniture King Division 2, the top two teams made a draw with the highlight being the breaks of 45 and 31 by Adam Harrison. Swad SC E made sure of the win over Newhall B in the final frames. Tony Mitchell taking the only win of the evening in an otherwise drawn match. Ivanhoe D still has a slim chance of promotion but did themselves no favours by losing out to Swad Cons C. As all players drew, Ian Jardine took the important frame against Stuart Tagg. Newhall C and Swad SC G could not be separated. At 2-2 Swad’s Simon Nettle took the next two to go favourite, but Newhall’s Andy Rice (34 break) over powered Clint Sherratt to give his team an equal share of the points. Burton Cons D impressed this week with a win over Alrewas B. Trevor Hayes and Callum Finnegan made sure of the first four leaving Paul Davies to pick up the winner. In David Wain Insurance Division 3 John Carr D whitewashed Willington B to take a 10pt lead at the top. Rolleston C took an easy win over their B team who could only produce three players. Belmont C were hoping to get into the promotion race but were held to a draw at Woodville S&S A and now need good results in their last five matches. Stapenhill C nearly pulled of the perfect result against Swad Cons D. John Griffin saved face for Swad by getting a frame against Stan Piechowicz. Bottom of the table clash between John Carr C and Newhall D ended all square. The highlight being a 28 break by Newhall’s Dan Jackson.
