2006-07: Week 23

In the Just Wood Premier Division, Swad SC A is cruising to the title and this week despatched Spot On A. The first frames were shared and included breaks of 42 by Steve Gaunt and 40 by John Chambers. Finally, Spot On ran out of steam, allowing Mark Sherratt to take both and knock in a 48 break. Burton Cons A visited Ivanhoe A and took the win but did not have it all their own way. George Cawkwell, Barry Fieldsend and Tony Eyre all managed one each but had no more to offer as Jonathan Fletcher struck with a 78 break and Stuart Roberts (49 break) took two for the win. Belvedere Park A is still putting in the effort as they play Burton Cons soon and would still like to finish the season in second place. They destroyed Swad SC B thanks to the superb potting of Owen Jones and Daz Lester. Alan Davies taking his first easily, the second on a respotted black after being 40pts down and Ryan Gilmore sharing with Phil Ball, reinforced this. Willington A hosted the match against Swad Cons A where every game was drawn proving that the Cons will be back after a season in division 1. Rolleston A beat Ivanhoe B, which has made it almost certain that they will be the third relegation team. Andy Winson and Kev Norris put Rolleston 4 up with Danny Thomson taking the winner. Belmont A’s win against Newhall A means they should be in the premier division next season. Kev Elkin and Ian Archer secured the first three followed by man of the match, Steve Burton playing supreme snooker to take both and some incredible long pots by Andy Straw to share with Lee Sherratt. In Presidents Division 1, Woodville WMC are champions after beating Swad SC C, top break of 46 going to Phil Wright. This has allowed Tutbury A to slot into second after the win over Belmont B. Tutbury B are also in the hunt for promotion and as Lee Causer took the only two framer in the win against Drakelow the team are poised to take advantage of any errors by Swad SC and Ivanhoe C, who both lost this week. Swad SC D punished Ivanhoe with Brian Bloor levelling at 2-2 and Andrew Bloor and Rob McNulty adding three more. John Carr A’s Dave Plunkett compiled a 45 break in the teams draw with Stapenhill A. This should be just enough to avoid relegation as Belvedere Park B fell to Burton Cons C and look like completing the relegation trio. In Furniture King Division 2, Swad SC F and Measham WMC are safe and are most likely to be joined by Swad SC E after the John Carr B match became a one sided affair. Ivanhoe D should have been battling for the top but have let it slip and lost to Alrewas B. Only Dave Watson took any points as Tony Truman, Brian Eccleston and Micky Morris saw off the attack. Newhall C came home victorious with a win over Swad Cons B. The Cons looked like winners after being 3-1 up at the halfway stage. Bob Birch then went 48 points clear but cracked under pressure from David Wain, and Andy Rice took the other two for the team win. In David Wain Insurance Division 3, Rolleston B was soundly beaten by Stapenhill D to send them third from bottom. This should just be a temporary blip as they have two games in hand over John Carr C who was beaten by the same score against Stapenhill C. Swad Cons D played well to see off the Willington B effort. Kev Starkey took the win in an otherwise drawn match. Rolleston D just edged out Woodville S&S due to Paul Fox’s win over Jim Gardiner. Rolleston C is also keen on the third promotion place and had no trouble keeping Belmont C in check. Anthony Rushton and Alex Smith put maximum pressure on Belmont with Dave Bentley and Ian Welby finishing with one each.
