2006-07: Week 3

In the Just Wood Premier Division, Burton Cons are the early pace setters dropping only 6 frames in the first 3 matches. Their latest victory saw Mat Milnes, Jonathan Fletcher and Mick Simpkins take everything from their B team stablemates. Only Stuart Roberts lost a frame to Zaheer Hussain.

Hot on the heels of the Cons are Swad SC A who took an important win away to Belvedere Park A. Mark Sherratt continued last week form with breaks of 53 & 48 in his defeat of Craig Keen. Darren Noble and Rob Chambers also proved unstoppable with Ryan Gilmore sharing the final match with John Chambers.

One team definitely not trying to win any trophies is last seasons elite, Belmont A. This week they could only produce 2 players and were promptly on the wrong end of a 6-2 score line as Willington A shared the match and then claimed the 4 free frames.

Newhall A and Spot On A were all even at the half way stage. Newhall’s Lee Sherratt took both off Steve Gaunt and Tony Clements dropped a frame to Steve Wilson for the Newhall win.

The mid table clash between Ivanhoe A and Rolleston A looked on paper as if it would go to Ivanhoe due to having home advantage. When the score was at 3-1 money was being placed on Ivanhoe but Danny Thomson took two back for Rolleston. Tony Eyre and Andy Winson halved the last match and Rolleston were happy with the draw.

In the Presidents Division 1 Woodville WMC A seem to have the bit between the teeth and took big wins in the first two matches. This week they were slowed by Burton Cons C as Phil Wright dropped both to Steve Hathway. Andy Thomson and Martin Smith levelled their matches with Tom Eggington and Joe Ellis respectively for the draw.

Swad SC C got back to winning ways by taking 6pts from Ivanhoe C. Geoff Pritchard was slightly annoyed it wasn’t more as he went in-off the final black against Tony Davey.

Tutbury B had their first win of the season against visitors Belvedere Park B. The home team were in control from the start taking 3 out of 4 frames. This was echoed in the second half including a division top break of 44 from Mark Press.

Stapenhill B maintained their 100% start to the season after a good result against their A team. This puts them just 2pts shy of Woodville.

Drakelow hosted the Tutbury A match where Pat Ryan was out of the blocks quickly against Dave Mabbott. By the time Mabbott got into his stride the first frame was over. In the second Mabbott never gave Ryan a chance and took it easily. The game between Simon Orpwood and Chris Mabbott was very tight. Orpwood lost the first on a respotted black but took the next with some controlled long potting. Alan Orpwood and Tony Coleman also shared frames with Steve Mabbott and Dave Powell for a drawn match.

In the Furniture King Division 2 Ivanhoe D continue to keep their grip on the top position by taking a 3rd successive win. It was all decided on the initial game as Matt Gray beat Alrewas A’s captain Will Sherratt. The other games were drawn and this included a 30 break by Dave Watson.

The Swad SC derby between the G and E teams ended in a draw. The highlight was Mark Hadley’s 48 break, which is the best in the division so far.
Newhall C are becoming the divisions draw specialists, this time against Swad Cons C. David Wain saved Newhall’s embarrassment by taking both off Errol Faulkner.

Alrewas B and John Carr B should both be in with a shout this season. They faced each other this week and the match went down to the final frames. Brian Aldridge and Daniel Pearsall played out a drawn game but Micky Morris took both and the win for Alrewas.

David Wain Insurance Division 3 has two early leaders in John Carr D and Stapenhill D. This week John Carr took advantage of their C team, as Mark King took his first win in the process. Stapenhill played Rolleston D in a slightly harder fought match. Level after 4 frames then Stapenhill’s Jamie Williams stepped up a gear to take both. Colin Wood then claimed the win.

Woodville S&S A visited Rolleston C and secured their first win of the season. In an otherwise drawn match Jim Gardner made the difference by taking both off Dave Bentley.

Please use this seasons match cards. They differ from last season by having a space that you can enter the order of play in and record high breaks next to each player. Old cards should be destroyed. You must use full names on the match cards. Please make sure your match cards reach Burton Cons by midday Monday to avoid a 2pt penalty.
