The snooker league took a break this week from normal proceedings to concentrate on the first round of the Just Wood Presidents Team Handicap. Burton Cons A have gotten off to a flyer in their first match against Rolleston A as Mick Fairbrother (39 break), Jonathon Fletcher (36 break), Stewart Roberts (30 break) and Matt Milnes inflicted the only whitewash of the week. Spot On A has fallen early in the competition to Belvedere Park A. Craig Keen is starting to produce some of last year’s standards by putting together a 31 break in his frame over Andy Jenkins. Tony Clements taking Spot On’s only frame against Alan Davies. Belmont A nearly got into winning ways when they played Swad SC A. Ian Archer & Steve Burton took the first two only to see Swad’s Brett Bailey & Mark Sherratt square the match and take it to a doubles frame decider. At this point the Belmont pairing of Archer & Burton ran out of steam as Sherratt and John Chambers put Swad into the next round. Newhall A suffered a shock defeat by Swad Cons A when the team only turned out 3 players. Newhall admitted that they just couldn’t get going and Kev Dixon, Mick Abbott and Dave Clark took full advantage. Ivanhoe B rounded out the Premier Division entry at the expense of Burton Cons B. The match had to go to decider where Gaz Dolman and Graham Measures sealed the Con’s fate. In the Presidents Division a couple of top teams failed to produce the goods on the night and will have to wait until next season for another chance. Belmont B had no answers to Tutbury B and this was made clear in the second frame when Mark Press compiled a 64 break in his defeat of Paul Twigg. Mark Vaughan took his frame on the other table but Russ Banner and Lee Causer made sure of the Tutbury victory. Drakelow A is starting to produce some form and sent Burton Cons C packing. Alan Orpwood, Simon Orpwood & Pat Ryan did the damage as the Con’s David Shipton took their consolation frame. This probably makes Woodville WMC A favourite in this division as they made short work of Belvedere Park B. They will have to maintain a good standard as a couple of teams have already rocked them this season. Stapenhill B came away from Ivanhoe C smiling when they took the final singles frame against the odds. Mark Parry cleared the final colours for a respotted black and then saw Tony Davey foul to give the frame and win to Stapenhill. In Furniture King Division 2 Swad SC E marched on by taking the doubles frame. Ray Stretton & Andy Jefferies proving too much for Alrewas B’s Tony Truman & Brian Eccleston. Alrewas were without their captain, Micky Morris and this probably cost them. Another final frame went to Ivanhoe D when the visited Swad SC G. Jeff Whetton & Dave Watson played some great shots to put Swad out. Swad Cons B were also forced to go to the wire by Newhall B. Both teams selected their doubles partnerships based on the players that had won the frames earlier. Unfortunately for Newhall’s Carl Glover & Mark Wheatley they were not able to equal their initial performance as Swad’s Chris Vernon & Alan Jowett sealed frame and match. Division favourites Measham WM A took a knock when they played Swad SC F. Only Nick Trayford took a frame as Adam Harrison, Peter Maguire and Richard Hinks guaranteed the Swad win. Measham will be looking for revenge when the play each other in the league tonight. In the battle of the Cons, Swad were the happier on the night. Burton’s Paul Davies, Pat Finnegan and Callum Finnegan could not prevent Graham Leech, Frank Travena and Ian Jardine from putting Swad into the next round. It was the clash of the Titans in the David Wain Insurance Division 3 as Stapenhill D played John Carr D. However Stapenhill never looked like taking the spoils in the one-sided match and will have to console themselves with top spot in the division for now. Rolleston B had the match over in double quick time against John Carr C. Only Rolleston’s floating player Darren Rowland gave John Carr a glimmer of hope when Gordon Jennings took the second frame but Tim Farrington and Joe Docksey were in no mood to let the frames slip and closed out the match and win. Swad Cons D took the win over Newhall D and this keeps all the Con’s teams in the competition. Woodville S&S A ditched the last of Belmont’s teams when they beat the C team, but it was good to see Derrick Price back in competitive snooker. The next round of the Just Wood Presidents Team Handicap and the first rounds of all the other snooker competitions will be drawn soon. Keep checking with your club for updates and The Burton Mail.
