2011-12: Week 16

In the Just Wood Premier Division, Burton Cons well and truly got last weeks defeat out of their system by thumping SDSC A 7-1. For the Cons, John Shilton was, again, in good form, giving Steve Ayre very little chance to show off his talents. John, with some excellent long pots and good cue ball control, knocked in an excellent 46 break. Not to be out done, Jonathan Fletcher made a tremendous break of 68 and it could have been more against the unlucky John Davis. Well done to Andy Goldingay for taking a frame off Mat Milnes, despite Mat making a well constructed 40 break.

Nothing seems to be going right for Ivanhoe B, who are having a rather disappointing season, this time, they lost at home 3-5 to Willington B. Jason Pickering played well to get a draw against Willington’s John Hardy. Stuart Tagg and Andy Jenkins had two contrasting frames of snooker, with the frames shared. Well done to newcomer, Mark Newhall, who did well to draw with Tony Clements. With the possibility of a draw on, it was down to Brendon Mattley against Steve Gaunt, but it was the Power Men’s Steve Gaunt who won the frame.

A good win for Belmont B against Rileys A 5-3. Belmont’s Rich Goldby was in devastating form in the first frame against Zaheer, but in the second frame, the reverse happened. Veteran Micky Morris also played well against Martin Riddel who, unfortunately, was not playing with his own cue, but even if he had his own cue, it would, I believe, have made little difference as Micky was potting everything. Arran Vaughan stole the first frame off Michael Dewsbury, but in the second there was no stopping Arron, who won the frame by more than 70 points. Rileys Michael Lomas did a similar job on Miffa Smith.

Stapenhill A won their first match of the season away to SDSC B 3-5. This narrows the gap between them and Ivanhoe B. Stapenhill have Steve Ford to thank for this victory, as he took both frames off Garton Bloor, with the help of a 32 break. Simon Orpwood and Andy Tomlinson drew their match, in what was a well contested match. Stapenhill’s skipper Carlos Jeffcoate lost the first frame to Andy Bloor on the black, but comfortably took the second, leaving Andy needing snookers very early on. Brian Bloor and Tim Knopik also played out a drawn match. Can this win for Stapenhill be the catalyst for the rest of the season for them to stay up?

Newhall kept up their push for the title, by beating Tutbury B 6-2. The Tutters have fallen into the relegation zone. Adam McInulty was in too good a form for the Silver Fox, Powell, and Adam knocked in some very good pots. Two cracking frames of snooker between Mark Satchwell and Chris Mabbott quite rightly ending as a draw. Newhall’s mister consistency, Wayne Brewin, dropped a frame to Steve Mabbott. It was left to Martin Hicks to get the frame for victory against Dave Mabbott, and he did even better, he got both.

A good result for Belmont A drawing away to Willington A.

In the David Wain Insurance Division 1, Woodville A did very well to draw at home to the leaders, Rileys D. For Woodville, Clint Sherratt was very unlucky to play somebody at the peak of his form, and very consistent, in the shape of Mike Flanagan, and lost both frames. Paul Slater for Woodville, drew with Mark Stirling, thanks to some steady play and good pots. The talented Andy Grainger got Woodville back in the game, by beating Steve Brimley. It was left to Woodville’s captain, Simon Mansfield, to grind out a draw against Mick Tonks.

Rileys B, at home to fourth placed SDSC C drew. For Rileys, Mark King was again their star player, by taking both frames of snooker off Lee Wright. By all accounts, this was a quality match. Young Adam Bridges did well to draw against the experienced Adam Harrison in two closely fought frames. Ade Harper and Ben Davies, after a bit of a struggle, finished level. Henry Tomas for SDSC, saved the day by beating Andy Speirs for a deserved draw.

Rileys C beat Drakelow 5-3 in a match that could have gone either way. For Rileys, Ryan Gibbs had no answer to the sure potting of Mark Baxter in the first frame, and conceded on the yellow. In the second frame, the game was very tight, with both players having the chances, but not taking them until Ryan potted the pink for the game. Adam Farrington, playing with a cue that had recently been modified, was in awesome form in both frames, with balls going in from every angle against the unlucky Pat Ryan. Paul Fox and Alan Orpwood had two good frames, which Paul won, but on another day, Alan could have won one too. Jay Hall lost both frames to Tony Coleman, the first on the pink, and the second on the black after he needed the last three colours to win.

A good win for Stapenhill B against the team below them Ivanhoe D 6-2. Stapenhill got off to a great start thanks to Colin Britton and John Richardson, who won all of their frames. For Ivanhoe, Alan Richardson was a little bit disappointed with himself when he played against Colin Britton, after making a well constructed 22 break to draw level with only pink and black left, lost on the black after five minutes of safety play, when Colin fluked the black. Two close frames between John Richardson and Barry Fieldsend, saw John edge them both. Two frames of snooker between two wiley players, Stan Pischowswi and Warner Collins also ended in a draw. Brian Sherratt did well for Stapenhill to also draw with George Cawkwell.

In the inter club derby between Burton Cons D and B teams, the match ended in a creditable draw. As in the previous week with Cons B, five of the eight matches ended on the pink or black. Paul Davies for the D team, lost two close frames to David Plunkett, also, Steve Castledine lost both frames to the improving David Shipton. Mick Buckland again won both frames, this time against Tom Egginton. Ian Shrive did a similar job on James Hart.

Ivanhoe C did their promotion chances a power of good by beating Burton Cons C.

In a tight match between SDSC D and Rolleston A ended in a well deserved draw. Andy McDonnell spoilt Kev Norris’ 60th Birthday by taking two very close frames. For Rolleston, Bob Tubey was in good form against Ryan Gilmore, making an excellent 35 break in the first frame, which gave him the confidence to comfortably win the second. Lee Sherratt knocked in a 24 break in drawing with Bob Sanders. Not for the first time this season, has the responsibility of winning a frame for the draw or win rested on David Wain’s shoulders. This time the captain was playing against the talented Tony Rushton and, as usual, he did not let the team down, he got the frame for the draw.

In the Rileys Division 2, Swad Cons B lost 2-6 at home to Newhall B, this was Swad Cons second defeat in a row. In the match between Cons Richard Brown and Jay Haywood, they had two close frames which were decided on the colours. For Newhall, Callum Gray was in good form against Colin Cope. Colin did not have an answer to Callum’s excellent potting, with breaks of 28 and 24. Newhall’s star man was Carl Glover, who played very well to take both frames off Bob Birch. Birchy lost both frames for the second week running, after previously being unbeatable. Joe McInulty also did a good job on Matt Newbold, winning both frames.

In a close match, the leaders Alrewas (Raptors) D struggled to beat Swad Cons C 5-3. Dave Trueman was well held by the false tanned Dave Bodie, just back from Hong Kong, in two very good frames of snooker. Ian Hilley and Gaz Ward also played out two very competitive frames with honours even. Alrewas’ star player was Colin Kinsella, who easily won both frames against Marc Eagan. Carl Poulton drew with Scott Gee to ensure the Raptors victory.

A good win for Belmont D against Swad Cons B 6-2 which keeps them well in the promotion hunt. Terry Bosworth was fairly comfortable in beating John Griffin. Brian Cutting beat Pete Fearn, Belmont had the perfect start 4-0 at the turn. This was carried on by Dougie Lees, beating John Petcher. It was left to Kevin Starkey for the Cons to get two frames on the score card, beating David Press.

A good result for Rolleston B, who are second from the bottom against Alrewas B, they won 5-3. For Rolleston, Lee Cooke was their top player, taking both frames off Brian Eccleston for the win. Neil Cheadle had two excellent frames against John Hill, which deservedly ended level. Arron Doyle held Tom Smith to a draw, whilst Rolleston skipper, John Ward did the same to Tony Trueman. In another Alrewas inter club derby between the A and C teams, the result was a 5-3 victory for the A team. The only difference between the two teams was Phil Marklew, who beat Colin Wood. Phil has not yet dropped a frame all season. Will Sherratt and Rob McMeecham drew their game, whilst on the other table, Roy was doing the same to Nigel Edwards. Alan Wilson and Karl Hancox had two cracking frames between which deservedly ended in a draw.

Willington C did very well to beat Tutbury C at Tutbury. Also, a good win for Woodville B 6-2 against SDSC E. Woodville’s form has slipped recently.
