2011-12: Week 2

In the Premier Division Burton Cons ‘A’ demolished Rileys ‘A’ 8-0, although Rileys only turned up with 3 players. Owen Jones knocked in a break of 37 against Zaheer, with some excellent potting. Mattie Milnes produced an excellent 50 break in no time at all, against the unfortunate Michael Dewsbury. On this form the Cons are going to take some stopping this season. In a close fought match, which went down to the last frame, between SDSC ‘B’ and Tutbury ‘B’ which ended in a draw. Andy Bloor produced the highest break of the season so far with a superb 60 break, and there was some excellent long shots, and good control of the cue ball against the unlucky Steve Mabbott of Tutbury. Dave Mabbott of Tutbury knocked in a 31 break against Garton Bloor. Simon Orpwood surprisingly lost to Chris Mabbott, and Carl White maintained his good start to the season. In another drawn game between Willington ‘A’ and SDSC ‘A,’ all the players managed a frame each. In another tight game between Belmont ‘B’ and Willington ‘B,’ Willington came out as the victors 3-5. They got off to an ideal start with Tony Clements of Willington taking both frames off Steve Burton, who has recently brought his cue out of retirement. Clements made a 40 break in the first frame. Miffa Smith and Steve Gaunt played out a closely fought draw. Mark Vaughan could only win a frame against Lionel Lewis and Micky Morris drew with John Hardy with Hardy making a 31 break. Likely challengers to Burton Cons ‘A,’ Tutbury ‘A’ and Ivanhoe ‘A’ played each other, with Tutbury coming out as victors 5-3. Tutbury got off to a good start with Craig Keen taking both frames off Michael Kirk in what was two competitive frames. John Sheriff aso won his first frame albeit on the black, but Antony Moore won the second frame for Ivanhoe. For Ivanhoe in the second half, Andy Marriott, with the help of a new cue, knocked a 37 break in the first frame. Andy was missing nothing in the second frame, and the wily old fox, Alan Davies dug deep to win the frame with a well constructed 40 break. Daz Lester and Ian Rennocks shared their frames to give Tutbury the win. Ivanhoe ‘B’ drew at home to Stapenhill ‘A’ with Jason Pickering of Ivanhoe beat Carl Jeffcoate with two good frames of snooker. Steve Ford for Stapenhill, took both frames off the unlucky Brendon Mattley. The other two matches were drawn. In the David Wain Insurance Division Woodville ‘A’ defeated Drakelow 7-1 in a local derby, a depleted Drakelow team were no match for the Woodville boys. With Pat Ryan winning a frame off Cos Theopistou to prevent a whitewash. This was a contrasting match with Ryan playing very well to win his frame and then Theopistou doing the same to win his frame. Andy Grainger was a joy to watch, playing beautiful snooker to easily beat Bob Brookes. Evenly matched frames between Paul Slater and Tony Coleman, with Slater winning both frames on the black and pink respectively. Stapenhill ‘B’ came down to earth after last weeks win to lose at home to possible promotion contenders Rolleston ‘A’ 3-5. “Stan the Man” took both frames off Andy Winson, and Kevin Norris took both frames off Stan’s son Simon. Greg Britton drew 1-1 with Tony Rushton, Rushton winning his frame ensured victory to Rolleston. Ivanhoe ‘D’ are back to their winning ways, beating Burton Cons ‘D’ 1-7 away. Only Steve Castledine for the Cons, taking a frame off Warner Collins to prevent a whitewash. The Bale family winning all of their frames against Paul Davies and Ian Shrive respectively. George Cawkwell took both frames off the evergreen Jim Jennings. Ivanhoe ‘C’ are off to a good start, beating SDSC ‘C’ 5-3. Gaz Dolman drew with Henry Thomas in an entertaining match. One of the most consistant players for Ivanhoe, Graham Measures, convincingly took both frames off Ian Mellor, and Steve Cockeram beat Pete Maguire 2-0. Rileys ‘D’ got off to the perfect start away to SDSC ‘D’ winning the first 4 frames, with Kev Chilton beating Henry Callton, and Mick Tonks beating Alex Raid. It was left to Mark Stirling to get the winning frame agaisnt Andy Rice in their drawn match. Ryan Gilmore added a bit more respectability to the result by beating Richard Foster. In the Rileys Division, it appears that Alrewas ‘A’ only want to stay in this division for a season, as they did a demolition job on Newhall ‘B’ 7-1. With Callum Gray taking an excellent frame against Alan Wilson, preventing a whitewash. Paul Marklew made a 46 break against Luke McNulty. Another high break for the A38 boys was by John Sharp knocking in a 30 break against Jay Haywood. Woodville ‘B’ early season form continues with another 5-3 victory, this time against Willington ‘C’ with Martin Ganley and David Budworth giving their team the ideal start by winning all of their frames, so at the half way stage, they couldn’t lose. Martin Ganley made a 25 break against Darren Lawrence. It would appear the Willington are not a walkover, and fought back by winning 3 of the last 4 frames. Steve Lane, for Willington, toke both frames off Bill Davidson. The last frame could have gone either way, but the second frame Lane won quite easily, so it was left to “hitman” Trevor Heath to secure victory for Woodville. In a closely fought match between Rolleston ‘B’ and Woodville ‘C’ ending in a draw, Luke Hudson, just back from his honeymoon, played some inspired snooker for Woodville against Aaron Doyle. Greenkeeper, Eric Thorniwell, played exceptionally well to take a frame off the talented Lee Cooke. Terry Eyley held Tim James to a draw, and Neil Cheadle of Rolleston, made a 32 break in beating Alan Shuttleworth in both frames. The local derby between Swad Cons ‘B’ and ‘C’ teams meant that the ‘C’ team came out with the bragging rights. The unlucky Dan Petcher, of the ‘B’ team made an excellent 30 break, only to lose on the black to a tremendous clearance by Bob Birch from green. Dan’s father, Jon, restored some of the balance by taking both frames off Mattie Newbold. The snooker at Alrewas is on the up with another local derby between Alrewas ‘D’ and ‘C’ teams with the newly formed ‘D’ team leading the way. Apparently, on table 1, the snooker played on there all night, was excellent. With captain David Trueman leading the way by comfortably beating Gary Bower. Colin Wood for the ‘C’ team also played his part by taking both frames off Charlie Poulton. Long may the revival at Alrewas continue. Tutbury ‘C’ and Alrewas ‘B’ fought out a well contested draw with Mark Storr and John Hill having played two epic frames, with the unfortunate Mark Storr losing both on the final black. Graham Fisher for Tutbury, took both frames off Darren Brown. In another drawn match between Belmont ‘D’ and SDSC ‘E,’ Dougie Lees of Belmont lost both frames to Andy Jefferies and Dave Press for Belmont, who played exceptional snooker to beat Phil Maddocks. Please Note: Swad Cons ‘A’ have withdrawn from the Premier Division, and this fixture is to be treated as a rest week. Also, competition sheets to be returned to Mark Vaughan no later than 30th September, to Belmont Services Club.
