2011-12: Week 4

Burton & District Clubs Snooker League Week 4 Just Wood Premier Division Burton Cons A march on, this time demolishing Stapenhill A 8-0. Mick Simpkins played his first match of the season. His opponent, Carl Jeffcoate, played the best he’s played so far but couldn’t stop Simpkins winning both on the pink. Mat Milnes made short work of Chris Gould and equalled the high break so far of 75, just missing the final black for the clearance. Owen Jones & Jonathan Fletcher completed the tally of frames for the Cons. Belmont A came unstuck as Newhall A handed them their first defeat. The first games were drawn and the match came down to Fran McInulty against Graham Bailey. McNulty took the first but it looked like the match would end all square with Bailey needing to clear from the blue. Unfortunately Bailey missed the pot leaving McInulty an easy blue for the match win. Belmont B’s return to the Premier Division isn’t looking too bad so far. At home to Tutbury B the Belmont Bashers quickly found themselves three down. Mick Morris gave a little hope by levelling with Dave Mabbott. Mark Vaughan swiftly despatched Dave Powell but Miffa Smith had already lost his first to Steve Mabbott. The second was going the same way but Miffa cleared from the brown for an equal share of the points. The Willington derby ended all square. The B team’s Steve Gaunt and John Hardy took a 3-1 half way advantage but the A team returned the score line with Wayne Periera and Bill Stewart. SDSC B fell at home to Ivanhoe A. Marriott, Rennocks & Moore did the damage for Ivanhoe with Swad’s highlight being two from Simon Orpwood and a 40 break. Finally in the Prem SDSC A took their first win away to Tutbury A. The difference in the match was Andy Goldingays two frames against Alan Davies. David Wain Insurance Division 1 Ivanhoe C has risen to the top this week by outplaying their D team. Last week I had picked three teams that could go all the way to the Premier. Now Ivanhoe are showing that this will be a four way fight for three places. Rolleston Adrop off top spot as Rileys B hold them to a draw. Rileys went 3-1 up thanks to Ade Harper and Adam Bridges but Rolleston were not going to give the match away and took three of their own with Tony Rushton and Kev Norris. Woodville S&S A put in a great performance against Burton Cons C, the highlight being a 46 break by Mark Hadley in his drawn game. Stapenhill B also took a good tally of points against Drakelow A. In the first half Bryan Sharratt showed a clean pair of heels to Mark Baxter and Stan Piechowicz levelled with Pat Ryan. The second half was a complete whitewash as Greg Britton and John Richardson picked off the frames. The mid table clash between SDSC D and Belmont C saw several small breaks. David Wain knocked in a 22 in his two frame win over Chris Stone as the home team took a 3-1 lead. Belmont’s Lee Turner then put his team level with Andy Rice (24 break) and Paul Eaton (30 break) taking one a piece. Rileys Division 2 Swad Cons C remain unbeaten so far and look strong at the top of the division. The evergreen Bob Birch has won every frame and along with Matt Newbould guaranteed Swad the draw. Willington C’s Lawrence Kenerson knocked in a 33 break in his win but Craig Wilson got the one he needed off Darren Harrison for the team win. Alrewas A were looking like early favourites but a draw with SDSC E has kept the top five close. Alrewas D again show how strong a side they have in their destruction of Swad Cons B. Poulton, Kincella & Hiley gave no quarter. It remained for Swad’s Kev Starkey to spare their blushes in his draw with Jim Edwards. The Woodville derby went the way off the B team. Trevor Heath should have taken both but the wiley Robert McInulty got the snookers required in the first and took the final black. Brian Alford and Bill Davidson made sure of their frames and the win. In the final match Dave Budworth made short work of the first frame but Ben Woodward found his range in the second keeping the C team in touch with the leaders. Tutbury C took their first win against Swad Cons D. Graham Fisher was the player of the night and defeated Malc Smith. Mark Storr took the final black of his match for his first frame in the league.
