Swadlincote Snooker Centre hosted its own derby in week 4 of the premier division, with the B team hosting the A team. Ben Davies was first up against Steve Ayre. Both players took a frame each in a tight game. Harry Farrell was next up against Chris Dewey. Harry did just enough in both frames to pinch a 2-0 win. Henry Thomas and Adam Harrison drew with John Davis and Carl White respectively earning a 5-3 win for the B team, giving them the bragging rights on the night.

Willington A built on their good start to the season with a 5-3 victory over Ivanhoe B. Gaz Barker kept up his 100% record for the season so far with a convincing 2-0 win over the unfortunate Gaz Dolman. Dangerous Daz Lester then took on Jerry Cook and again took both frames to put the home side in control at the break. Jan Pawlazych then faced Steve Cockeram, with the away player putting in a strong performance to steal both frames. Bill Stewart played out a draw with Daz Wilson to earn the home side the victory.

Champions Burton Cons A took on the Tutbury Tutters, with the home side putting on a powerful display to win the match 7-1. Firstly, Mat Milnes went up against the dangerous Chris Mabbott. Milnes started slowly which allowed his opponent to take control and produce a well constructed 39 break to take the first frame. However, it is difficult to keep a player of Milnes’ ability quiet for too long and he came back well to take the second with some excellent potting. Owen Jones played Dave Powell on the other table, with Jones continuing his strong start to the season taking both frames easily, including a 30 break, a string of 20+ breaks and also preventing his opponent from reaching double figures in the second frame. Jonathan Fletcher took on Dave Mabbott to begin the second half of the match. Tutbury’s night got from bad to worse as Fletcher knocked in breaks of 55 and 38 to take both frames convincingly. Finally, Darren Coady played great match play snooker to beat the previously unbeaten Steve Mabbott and complete the rout for the Cons.

Ashby Ivanhoe A have emerged as early challengers for the title, helped by an 8-0 whitewash of Willington B. Andy Marriott showed great form in knocking in breaks of 30, 45 and a lovely 70 to defeat Lee Cooke, who also made a 27 break. Ian Rennocks then continued his good start to the season, producing breaks of 44 and 53 to beat Dave Mawhinney. There was no relenting in the second half of the match as Mick Kirk beat John Hardy, aided by a 31 break and finally Ant Moore beat Tony Clements, with the home player also knocking in a 31 break to complete a great performance from the home side.

Belmont B hosted Alrewas A in a match that could have easily finished a draw. Michael Lomas played Colin Kinsella in two tight games that were shared. Brett Craddock then played a cagey match against Ian Hiley, which also finished honours even. Josh Gebbie then took the first frame against Carl Poulton. The away player responded with a strong performance in the second frame to again tie the scores. Arron Vaughan proved to be the difference, continuing his good form in beating Dave Trueman and taking the win for the home side 5-3.

Alrewas B welcomed Belmont A in another tight match with the away side emerging as 5-3 victors. Will Sherratt was first up against Fran McInulty with both players winning a frame each. John Sharpe then felt the potting power of Ian Archer, who beat him 2-0 including a 34 break. Phil Marklew showed that he is a threat at this level by beating Shaun Gebbie. Mark Press got the all important two frames against Alan Wilson to grab the win for Belmont and keep them in the shake up.

Alrewas C against Burton Cons B started at cracking pace with the Burton captain Dave Plunkett producing a superb finish in the first frame against Rob Mcmeechan by clearing the colours to win on the black the second went the same way for an early Burton lead that was  short lived as the home teams Karl Hancox overpowered Dave Shipton and made the games highest break of 38 to level the match. Burtons Tom Egginton then played Ian Bradford and in a close match Tom put the away team on the brink of a win with two well won frames only to see his efforts wasted by the forth Burton player not turning up to gift Alrewas the draw.

Burton Cons C had a tight match against Stapenhill B who on their night are capable of beating anyone which showed as Tim Knopik took two off talented stand in Mick Hickebottom, Mice Buckland did well in beating Andy Tomlinson to level the match to then see teammate Steve Castledine win two entertaining frames against the steady John Sheriff leaving veteran Cons campaigner Jim Jennings to play Colin Britton in what turned out to be the match of the night Colin winning the first in a close contest but Jim took the last frame for the Cons win.

Another Derby was played out by two of the divisions strongest squads at Swad Snooker Centre as the D team hosted the C on paper this match looked to have a draw written all over it but the D team had other ideas by giving the C team a drubbing 7-1,Wayne Brewin David Wain and Lee Sherratt winning two each and Ryan Gilmore drawing with Simon Orpwood who made a 35 break, high break of the match went to Wayne Brewin with 45.

Stapenhill A had a win against Rolleston A who could only field 3 men proving costly gifting the win to their opponents sadly no match report.

Swad Cons A had an away win at Willington 5-3 but sadly no match report was included.

Tony Coleman writes for Riley’s Division Two

Willington D are off to a flyer so far this season as they went to Swad Cons D and dished out the tin hat to the home side winning 8-0.  Dave Budworth whose hours of practise are paying off as he gave Pete Fearn very little opportunity to show off his potting skills as he easily won both frames.  Trevor “hot shot” Heath was also in good form in taking both games off Barry Bentley.  Jon Petcher the Cons captain put in a spirited display but was not able to get anything from Bill Davidson.  Two steady frames of snooker by Brian Alford in beating John Griffin to get the whitewash.

Surprise team in second place at the moment are SDSC E who got one over their club colleagues SDSC F who they thrashed 8-0.  Neil Harcombe got them off to a good start in taking both frames against Alex Read which included a nice 23 break.  The good work continued with Tony Mitchell who is in fine form so far this season as he won two close frames with Alex Glover.  Andy Jefferies and Ashley Beard played out two good frames of snooker with both of them being won by Andy and just to round off a great evening Ray Bancroft then easily won both frames in some style against the unlucky Henry Cotton.

Fourth placed Belmont C kept up their good run as they beat Tutbury B 5-3 at Tutbury.  Belmont’s Terry Bosworth who is yet to drop a frame was again playing well making some good pots in beating Jeff Siddalls.  Brian Cutting also of Belmont is starting to find a little bit of form as he had to play well to take both frames against Graham Smith.  Paul Atterbury started off the Tutbury comeback with a well constructed 31 break but could only draw with Dougie Lees.  Dougie’s one frame was sufficient for the Belmont win.  Colin Bell added more respectability to the final result as he took both frames in a fairly even game.

Ivanhoe D got back in the groove after their slight hic-cup the previous week as they beat Swad Cons D 7-1.  Jack Bale gave them the ideal start as he took two fairly straight forward frames off Carl Pitcher with some good pots.  Josh Collins then made it 4-0 at the turn as he won both frames with a fine array of pots in beating the sun tanned Dave Bodie.  Ivanhoe’s Tim Bale shared two well matched frames with Bob Birch with neither player deserving to lose.  The silky skills of the Ivanhoe potting machine aka Warner Collins was most definitely on display as he beat Marc Egan in style.  This win now puts Ivanhoe up to third.

The match between Rolleston B and Woodville S&S A was most certainly a game of two halves as Rolleston raced into a 4-0 lead at the turn.  Thanks first to Neil Cheatle who was in good form as he won both frames against Pat Ryan.  Then the two frames between Steve Atkin and Tony Coleman could have gone either way but they went Steve’s way winning the first on the black then the second on a re-spotted black.  Then the turnaround started when Woodville’s Alan Orpwood won his first frame fairly easily against John Ward.  The second frame was a little closer with Alan potting brown, blue and pink to beat John.  Jim Marcer again came to Woodville’s rescue with a convincing first frame win against Dave Bentley.  In the second frame after Jim being well in front Dave clawed his way back into the game and the match rested on the final black, after about ten minutes of safety play and attempted pots missing.  Dave had an easy pot into the centre pocket but missed it leaving Jim to secure the draw for Woodville.

Rolleston C had a good win at home to Alrewas D winning 5-3.  Richard O’Dell shared the two frames with Tony Trueman with both players making some fine pots.  For Alrewas John Hill put them in a strong position with some fine safety play as he took both frames against Kieron Waddell to put them 3-1 up at the turn.  That was as good as it got for Alrewas.  Kev Norris put in a strong performance to put his side level in beating Dave Riley.  It was then left to Lionel Lewis to win the last two frames for Rolleston for the win which he did with some fine potting and safety play against Tom Smith.
