The top two pace setters clashed in week 4 of the Premier Division of the Burton and District Snooker League. Burton Cons A hosted Rileys A and with both sides having started the new season well, a good match was expected. Matt Milnes was first up against Nigel Tomlinson, who was boasting an unbeaten record so far this season. Milnes potted well at key times to take both frames and put the Cons in front. On the other table, Owen Jones was in no mood to hang around as he defeated Andy Spiers with breaks of 43, 32 and 31. Stuart Roberts then took on Mark Stirling, with both
players potting well. A frame each was a fair result. Finally, Mick Buckland potted well in taking both of the frames against Tom Elliott to leave the final score 7-1 to the Cons.
Ivanhoe A hosted Belmont A in what looked another great match on the night as both sides will be in the hunt for the title come the end of the season. First up was the talented Andy Marriott playing the visitor’s Shaun Gebbie. Marriott started well with a 33 and then clinched the first frame with a nice 47. The second frame was a more scrappy affair, but the Ivanhoe player potted well at key points in the frame to take it. Ian Rennocks played Fran McInulty on the other table, with the first frame looking like it could go either way. Rennocks took it and then won the second convincingly with a 46 break. Ant Moore played solid snooker in the first frame against Mark Press, including a 31 break. However, Press came back fighting in the second to take it. Finally, Daniel Blunn played Ian Archer. Blunn started well with a 37 break to take the first frame. Back came Archer in the second frame, clinching it on a tense, re-spotted black to leave the final score 6-2 to the hosts.
Fantastic sporting game at the Legion with Alrewas B just about coming out on top. Carl Poulton and Dean Johnson shared their game, Poulton easing to the first but Johnson fighting back excellently in the second. Ian Hiley also shared the spoils with Bill Stewart. Hiley made short work of the first and looked to be taking the second but Stewart cleared the final colours with some superb pots. Dave Trueman and Daz Lester took a frame each. Johnson looked to be on course to take both frames but Trueman fought back late on in the second to earn the team a point. Colin Kinsella got the Alrewas boys over the line with both frames against Jan Pawlazyck. It certainly wasn’t comfortable for Kinsella though with Pawlazyck pushing him right to the end in both frames.
Ivanhoe B picked up a good 5-3 victory away at Stapenhill A. Brendon Mattley and Ivan Birkin did the damage as they defeated Chris Sheldrake and Carl Jeffcoate respectively. Andy Gretton halted the surge by taking both frames from Stu Tagg, but Jason Pickering took the decisive frame against Mark Waldron to clinch the win.
An evenly matched game saw Belmont B draw with Alrewas A. Arron Vaughan shared the frames with Alan Wilson, while Josh Gebbie also drew with John Sharpe. Phil Marklew took his customary two frames against Miffa Smith. The visitors were denied the victory by Rich Goldby, who potted well to beat Will Sherratt.
Swadlincote Snooker Centre B also drew with Tutbury A. Mark Satchwell potted well to take both frames from Chris Mabbott, but Tutbury responded when Steve Hathaway won both of the frames against Henry Thomas. Ben Davies and Pete Maguire shared the frames with Dave Mabbott and Dave Powell respectively to end the night with four frames a piece.

Alrewas C played out a fair draw on the night at home to Willington C, John Richardson defeated Dave Yeomans who was making his league debut for Willington, Steve Lane struck back, beating Tom Wright with an unconvincing performance. Steve Butterworth beat Colin Wood in a tight first frame and then bombed through the second. The match of the night was between Karl Hancox and Willington’s Loz Kennerson; both frames went the same way with Karl building a lead and holding on to it for the win and team draw.

Newhall A is again among the leaders after missing promotion last season by the narrowest of margins and faced a capable side in the form of SDSC E Lee Sherratt drew with Nick Welsh as did Carl Glover and Callum Gray with Tony Mitchells and Ray Bancroft respectively the result went down to the last games and it was Martin Hicks who came out on top against Andy Jefferies to win the match for Newhall 5-3.
Willington B had a good night against Swad Cons A despite the efforts of Swad’s Andy Grainger who was making his second appearance of the week, which must have done him good as he won both frames against Andy Jenkins with breaks of 31 and 39, Trevor Heath hit back for Willington beating Simon Orpwood and with Tony Clements drawing with Lee Wood the result went down to the last games between Willington’s Steve Gaunt and Paul Slater, the Willington man took both for the team win 5-3.

Riley’s B team had a good match against Alrewas D even though they ended up on the wrong end of a 7-1 defeat; Kate Stirling took a frame off Brian Aldridge with Gilda Horvath coming up against an on form Tony Trueman who won both frames with the help of a 28 break, the second half saw Yvonne Spendlove lose to Tom Smith and Marie Bridges narrowly lose to Dave Riley after an excellent safety battle.
Rolleston B received a thrashing from league leaders Stapenhill B going down 8-0 at home.

Belmont C carried on their winning ways this week against Rolleston C, Terry Bosworth got the home team off to a good start winning the first on a black game against league newcomer Ade Owen and then taking the second more easily, the match on the other table saw Lionel Lewis take two frames off an unlucky Brian Cutting to level the scores, Doug Lees took on Rolleston skipper Kev Norris and lost the first to some excellent play then came roaring back to take the second leaving the result on the last match between Belmont captain Dave Press and Rob Sanders, in two close frames it was the Belmont man who came out on top to give his team the victory 5-3.
Woodville B put up a good performance against Belmont D going down 5-3, Mick Morris beat Mark Gallagher and looks to be getting back to his best making a 28 break and missing a red with the balls at his mercy, Jack Gallagher lost his first to Brett Craddock but came back strongly to take the second with some excellent potting, Mark Vaughan made his debut and won the first frame at a cantor to then see Bill Hunt pot brilliantly to take the second this was backed up by Terry Eley who took the first on a respot off Tom Holland, the Belmont man hitting back to win the second and take the match.
Ashby Ivanhoe D visited Swad Cons C and came away with a narrow victory, Tim Bale took two off Swad’s John Griffin but the home teams Dan Petcher levelled the scores with great potting against Tony Tredger, Jon Petcher and Jason Collins then drew leaving the result on the last match between Swad’s Ron Kendrick and Warner Collins, in two close frames it was the Ashby man who did enough to take both frames for the 5-3 win.
Tutbury B faced Swad Cons D, Dave Brady took on Cons floating player Andy Grainger and duly lost both, Colin Bell got the home team on the board by beating Kieron Dadley, Paul Atterbury and Andy Boam then drew, leaving Jeff Siddalls to play Swad’s Jack Dixon, the reliable Siddalls taking both for the Tutbury win 5-3.
