Belmont B welcomed Spot On A in the President’s Cup and it was the visitors who left with the right result. Leo Worsley was first up against Ade Harper. The visiting player potted well to take both frames. Brett Craddock and Nigel Tomlinson won a frame each. Mark Stirling took control of the match by beating Mick Morris. Finally, Zaheer Hussain shared the frames with Tom Elliott which left the final score at 6-2 to the Spot On side.

Defending champions Ashby Ivanhoe A won 7-1 at home against Alrewas A. Andy Marriott was again in fine form as he made breaks of 69 and 30 in winning both frames against Karl Hancox. On the other table, Ian Rennocks made breaks of 38 and 35 as he defeated Tom Smith. Daniel Blunn and John Richardson won a frame each. The final match saw Ant Moore pot well to beat Colin Wood, aided by breaks of 34 and 32.

Swadlincote Snooker Centre A and Rolleston A went all the way as a deciding doubles frame was required. Andy Goldingay and Steve Ayre won it against Tony Rushton and Bobby Cliff. Earlier on in the night, Steve Ayre and Chris Dewey drew with Bobby Cliff and Rich O’Dell respectively. Andy Goldingay beat Joe Docksey. Ant Rushton forced the decider as he beat John Davis.

Spot On C also won 5-4 against Swad Cons A. John Hardy potted well to beat Lee Wood. And Jenkins also won 2-0 against Simon Mansfield. Trevor Heath lost to Paul Slater to reduce the deficit and Andy Grainger knocked in a 32 in beating Tony Clements to force the decider. Hardy and Jenkins won the tense frame against Wood and Grainger to earn the host’s passage into the next round.

Tutbury A also went through to the next round as they beat Burton Cons B 5-3. Dave Powell shared the frames with Jon Swift and on the other table, Simon Smith won both against Steve Hathaway to give the visitors a 3-1 lead at the halfway stage. Chris Mabbott beat Mike Buckland and Dave Mabbott defeated Ryan Gibbs to turn the match around.

In the Nicholas Humphreys President’s Cup Division One there were byes into the quarter finals for Stapenhill A and Newhall A. Joining them there will be Tutbury B, Ivanhoe C, Alrewas B, Stapenhill B and Rolleston C. The match between SDSC C and Burton Cons C was rearranged. Rolleston C were able to field a strong team as they won the Rolleston derby 6-2 against the club’s B team. There were wins for Wayne Smith and Tom Lucas against John Harvey and Lionel Lewis whilst Billy Ashton drew with Rob Sanders and John Sully drew with Kev Norris.

It was a cracking match at the Legion between Alrewas B and SDSC B with some excellent snooker played by both teams. Carl Poulton beat Adam Harrison after two quality safety battles. A 31 in the first and a couple of smaller breaks in the second did the damage. Adam Walton was on fire for a frame and a half against Henry Tomas. A 33 break sewing up the first one and he established a big lead in the second. Credit to Tomas though who hung in there and produced his own fireworks to take a draw. Ian Hiley and Simon Shilton were in a game of two halves. Hileys 37 in the first and Shilton’s 40 in the second won the frames in an excellent encounter.
That left the Legion’s Dave Trueman needing one frame against Ben Davies for the win. Davies took a scrappy first and the second went to the final three colours. Davies potted the blue but left the pink and `Paperboy’ Trueman delivered pink and black for the win.

SDSC suffered another defeat with their D team being beaten 6-2 at home by Tutbury B. The Tutters won the first 3 matches on the card with victories for Alan davies, Wayne Pereira and Daz Lester. Andy Bloor kept the score respectable by defeating Bill Stewart.

Four of the 5 fixtures played were won by the away side and another home defeat was suffered by Swad Cons B. They went down 5-3 to Stapenhill B. Paul Hollis and Tim Knopik drew in the first match whilst the Cons’ Adam McNulty beat Greg Britton to put the Cons 3-1 up. It was all Stapenhill though in the second half with wins for Colin Britton and Bryan Sherratt over Vince Draper and Gez White.

There was an incredibly tight match played out at Woodville with their A team and the C team of Ashby Ivanhoe. Gaz Domaln won for Ashby against Bob Brookes whilst Alan Orpwood returned the compliment for Woodville by overturning Graham Measures. Jim Marcer drew with Darren Wilson as did Tony Coleman with Jerry Cook leading to a deciding frame of doubles. It was Ivanhoe who just managed to creep over the line to earn their place in the last 8.

Kate Stirling writes for Division 2

The 2nd division Presidents’ cup draws were set to deliver an eventful night, and with three of the clashes resulting in a deciding doubles frame, they didn’t fail to disappoint. Dave Budworth and Bill Davidson, who had won there of Woodvilles’ frames between them, took on another strong pairing in Jim Jennings and Ian Protheoe of Burton Cons who also securing three frames on the night. The close frame was a worthy finale with Budworth and Davidson the victors for a strong Woodville D team.

The second decider ensued after a heartfelt battle by the Spot on D ‘Snookettes’ who relished their underdog status by taking the Tutbury D team all the way. They certainly had the opposition worried as Marie Bridges and Gilda Horvath secured draws and an in-form Yvonne Spendlove a deserved winner!  The match was poised at four a piece as Spendlove partnered Kate Stirling to attempt a historic victory, it wasn’t to be for the ladies as experience shone through and a strong Tutbury pairing made a flurry of breaks which left the Snookettes with too much to do.
Rolleston D also went all the way against  Ivanhoe D. Steve Atkin and John Ward went into battle against Warner  Collins and Brian Lowie, the latter playing some solid snooker to scoop victory for the visitors.
This week’s Derby match contested by Swad cons C and D saw the D team romp to a convincing 6 2 victory, Bob Birch, Gaz Ward ad Andy Boam all securing two nil wins on the night against their club-mates.
Woodville B took on the Belmont C at home and it looked set to be a close match as the scores were two a piece at half-time with Mark Gallager knocking in a 29 break during his 2 nil win for the home side. Belmont C avoided a tense decider as Dave Press fought hard for a draw and Brian Cutting won to secure a 5-3 result on the night.
