David Wain Insurance Premier League by Owen Jones
Burton Cons A needed a big win on the night and that is exactly what they got as they defeated Spot On C 8-0. Graham Stevens hit the ground running for the hosts as he made a 49 break to beat Conrad Thomas. On the other table, Matt Milnes was in commanding form as he won both frames against Tony Clements. Darren Coady then potted well to take both frames and finally, Owen jones made a 42 break as he beat Steve Gaunt.
Second placed Ivanhoe A won 7-1 away at Spot On A. Ant Moore won both frames against Ade Harper to get the ball rolling. Ian Rennocks also potted well to defeat Tom Elliott. Andy Marriott continued the onslaught as he beat Andy Spiers. Mark Stirling went one down against Mick Kirk but made a 40 in the second frame. Kirk came back at him with a 33 of his own. Stirling took it on the final black to close out the match.
Alrewas A drew at home with Spot On B. Karl Hancox and John Richardson drew with Loz Kennerson and Steve Lane respectively. Tom Smith won both with some good potting against Lee Cooke and finally, Steve Butterworth earned the draw for the visitors by winning both frames against Rob McMeecham.
Belmont A won 5-3 at home against Rolleston A. adam McNulty drew first blood as he won the first against Ant Rushton. The second was a different story as Rushton won it with reds to spare. Ian Archer won both against Mark press in a grueller. Archer dominated the first frame and made breaks of 50 and 28. The second frame saw Press hardly miss a ball but Archer dug in to win it. Arron Vaughan took the first frame with a 30 break against Joe Docksey. His opponent responded in the second to take it on the pink. Bobby Cliff won the first against Graham Bailey but the Belmont man knocked in a cracking pink to take the second and earn the victory for the visitors.
Ivanhoe B drew with Tutbury A. The Pickering boys Adam and Jason drew with Dan Mabbott and Chris Mabbott respectively, Chris knocking in a 41 in his match. Bren Mattley won both against an out of sorts Steve Hathaway and Dave Mabbott beat Dave Marriott to earn the draw.
Swadlinote Snooker Centre A lost 5-3 at home against Burton Cons B. Ryan Gibbs was the beneficiary of an absent player and Mike Buckland drew with Chris Dewey leaving the score at 3-1 at the turn. Steve Ayre and Dave Plunkett drew and Andy Goldingay made a 36 break as he drew with Jon Swift.
Swad Cons A won 6-2 at home against Belmont B. Mark Hadley was first on and he put the hosts up with a victory against Ian Gibson. Andy Grainger then knocked in a 48 to beat Zaheer Hussain. Mark Vaughan continued his good form by taking both against Paul Slater. Lee Wood potted well and knocked in a 31 to beat Brett Craddock.
PJM Fascias Division 1 by Mick Buckland
In the PJM Fascias Division One, the title race swung back in favour of Tutbury B. They were 6-2 winners whilst SDSC B lost 5-3 at Stapenhill A. Wayne Pereira starred again as he rolled in a nice 48 on his way to defeating George Cawkwell of Ivanhoe C. Jan Pawlazcyk made a rare appearance and also scored twice against Graham Measures. The matches between Bill Stewart and Gaz Dolman and then Daz Lester and Jerry Cook were halved to re-establish a 9 point cushion at the top for the Tutters.
SDSC B lost 5-3 away at Stapenhill A in a match that could have gone either way. Andy Tomlinson made the difference as he beat Simon Shilton 2-0 in two close frames whilst the other three games were all ending all square. Andy Gretton with Adam Harrison….Carl Jeffcoate and Henry Tomas and Steve Ford with Ben Davies. This keeps SDSC within touching distance of promotion and Stapenhill just two points ahead of Alrewas B in third.
Alrewas B were able to close the gap on Stapenhill A with a 6-2 win of their own against SDSC C. man of the match overall was Nick Harcombe of the Swad side as he rolled in breaks of 38 and 24 against Adam Walton. However Ian Hiley, Carl Poulton and Dave Trueman all stepped up to th [plate with wins over Dave Tekesbury, Matt Tewkesbury and Ray Bancroft. With 8 match wins this season, it looks like SDSC C have done enough to claim another spell in Division One next season whilst anything can happen in the race for third between Alrewas and Stapenhill.
Woodville A lost again and look doomed -last week to Rolleston C who are making a late charge for promotion themselves. Jim Marcer and Tony Coleman made it difficult for The Rollers as they grabbed draws against John Brentnall and Jon Sully. Rolleston made it six unbeaten for the team as Wayne Smith did the same for himself with a 2-0 win over Pat Ryan. Tom Lucas was also on form as he beat Bob Brooks to complete the win.
Newhall A made it four wins on the bounce as they defeated Rolleston B 6-2. Jon Finch was first on and beat Rob Sanders who could count himself a little unlucky. Lionel Lewis struggled on the night as he lost to Carl Glover to leave the away side 4-0 up at half time. In the first frame between Kev Norris and Martin Hicks, Martin missed a blue over the bag to let Kev clear up. He then potted a great pink in the second and moved the black off the cushion to get it back to 4-2. John Harvey enjoyed a bit of run in his first against Mark Anslow who battled back well to win a close 2nd frame. Could easily have been a draw but Newhall hung on for the win. They are only nine points off promotion so with some good performances in the next 4 weeks they could yet get themselves promoted. Rolleston are now 11 points from safety.
Swad Cons B pretty much secured their place in the division for next year as they had a great 6-2 win away at Burton Cons B. Nick walker rolled in 37, 32 and a 30 against Lee Louch who battled well to claim a draw. Ian Shrive scored the only other point for Burton Cons in his half with Jake Mole. Paul Hollis and Vince Draper were both on target as they defeated Tom Egginton and Daz Stillman. Whilst The Cons of Swad look safe, the Burton equivalent are looking over their shoulders after 4 straight defeats leaves them just 9 points off of the drop-zone.
Perhaps the most significant result last week was scored by Stapenhill B as they reduced the gap to their opponents to just one point as they beat SDSC D 5-3. All 4 matches could have gone either way but Andrew Bloor halved with Greg Britton in the top match whilst Brian Bloor then shared his two frames with John Sherriff.. David Wain could certainly count himself unlucky as Bryan Sharratt found the fluke button on his side enabling him to win making the difference on the night. Garton Bloor and Tim Knopik also shared as things tighten up at the bottom end of the division.
The top four breaks in the division have all been played since Christmas with Tom Lucas’ fantastic 77 being superseded by Lee Louch with his magnificent 81 last week. Wayne Smith is now in the top four of the averages behind 3 that have been there all season…Wayne Pereira, Nick Harcombe and Adam Harrison These four are in the prime spots for the end of season Ken Shipton Memorial Tournament to be played at Belmont on 23rd April.
Newton Fallowell Division 2 by Mike Buckland
Leaders Woodville C were without a fixture last week as they were due to play one of the sides that have dropped out.
Alrewas C made a slight inroad by beating Belmont D 5-3. Star man was Alan Wilson as he knocked a nice 33 in on his way to beating Simon Deakin.John Sharpe also won his match versus Ian Gibson. The resistance for Belmont was supplied by Andy Biggadike, who beat Will Sherratt. The match between Tom Holland and Gary Green was halved.
Tutbury C missed the chance to close the gap by being beaten at Swad Cons D. Only Paul Atterbury won for the Tutters whilst there were wins for Gaz Ward, who rolled in a nice 24, and Kieran Dadley for the Swad side whilst Bob Birch drew with Jeff Siddalls.
Ivanhoe D and Woodville B played out a 4-4 draw at Ashby. Brian Lowrie winning for Ivanhoe and Denis Moore for Woodville with the two other matches being drawn.
Burton Cons D drew for the fourth match running…this time against the Snookerettes of Spot On D. There were two wins on each side. Paul davies and Al Munnien for the Cons’ boys and Yvonne Spendlove and Clare Peaty for Spot On. Clare rolled in a lovely 32 along the way showing how far these ladies have come and you would win more frames than you would lose in the Premier Division doing that.
John Sharpe, Wayne Brewin, Mark Satchwell and Denis Moore are in the box seats for the end of season Ken Shipton Memorial tournament on the 23rd April. There have now been 32 breaks over 30 this season in the division with the top 15 all scored by Woodville C players-Wayne Brewin still leading the way with a 54.
