David Wain Insurance Premier League by Owen Jones
Belmont A visited Alrewas A and came away with a 6-2 victory. Karl Hancox found Ian Archer to be too good on the night. John Richardson responded by winning both frames against Matt Farmer. Arron Vaughan then potted well to defeat Tom Smith and finally, Adam McInulty came back well and won both frames against Rob McMeecham to complete the scoring.
Belmont B lost 5-3 at home against Rolleston A. Joe Docksey won both frames against Ian Gibson and Mark Press claimed the frames as the hosts could only field three players. Mick Morris knocked in a 40 break as he beat Bobby Cliff. Zaheer Hussain and Richard O’Dell won a frame each to close out the match.
Burton Cons B won 6-2 at home against Spot On C. Simon Smith potted well to take both frames against Conrad Thomas. Dave Plunkett also played well to beat Tony Clements. Mike Buckland and Trevor Heath battled to win a frame each, Heath knocking in a 31 break. Jon Swift and John Hardy also won a frame each, which left the hosts as winners.
Burton Cons A visited Ashby Iavanhoe B and came away with a 7-1 win. Bren Mattley was well beaten in the first frame by John Shilton, but came back strongly in the second to take it. Stuart Tagg found Matt Milnes to be too god on the night. Graham Stevens knocked in a 48 break as he defeated Dave Marriott. Finaly, Jason Pickering and Owen Jones played two quick fire frames in which Jones came out on top in both.
Swadlincote Snooker Centre A and Spot On A could not be separated on the night. Ade Harper continued his good form as he beat Steve Ayre. Mark Stirling followed that up by beating John Davis. Andy Goldingay responded with a 30 break as he beat Nigel Tomlison and Chris Dewey earned the draw as he defeated Andy Spiers.
Ivanhoe A won 5-3 away at Spot On B. Andy Marriott made a 30 break as he beat Lee Cooke. Steve Butterworth drew with Ant Moore. Ian Rennocks made a 39 break but it was to no avail as Loz Kennerson won both frames. Daniel Blunn secured the victory as he beat Steve Lane, aided by a 32 break.
Swad Cons A won 7-1 against Tutbury A. Lee Wood beat Steve Mabbott with some good potting. Andy Grainger was in good form as he made breaks of 57,43 and 31 as he defeated Chris Mabbott. Paul Slater beat Dan Mabbott and finally, Simon Mansfield drew with Dave Mabbott.
PJM Fascias Division 1 by Mick Buckland
Tutbury B tightened their grip on the division with a strong performance in defeating Swad Cons B by an emphatic 6-2 scoreline. There were wins for Bill Stewart and Wayne Pereira over Bob McNulty and Paul Hollis. Alan Davies drew with Jake Mole whilst Daz Lester halved with Nick Walker. Nick had a lovely 45 along the way and will be getting stronger every week after returning to the game after a number of years away from it.
Tutbury are 12 points ahead now of the Swad Snooker Centre’s B team captained by Pete Maguire. They enhanced their promotion prospects with a thumping 7-1 win at Stapenhill B. There were wins for Pete himself, Adam Harrison and Henry Tomas whilst the only bright spot for The Institute was the draw for John Sherriff with Simon Shilton. SDSC B have lost only one in twelve whilst this ended a five match unbeaten run for Stapenhill and leaves them 5 points from safety.
Alrewas B are still in third but are hanging on a bit having not won a league match since 8th December. Last week they were undone 6-2 by Ivanhoe C. Carl Poulton and Adam Walton who were both having great seasons were beaten by Gaz Dolman and Steve Cockeram. Darren Wilson also chipped in for the home side with a victory over Dave Trueman whilst Ian Hiley spared the Legionnaires blushes with a win over Jerry Cook. The Ashby boys for their part are now on an unbeaten run of 8 matches having looked relegation threatened earlier in the season.
The Alrewas blip has allowed Stapenhill A to take closer order at the top end are they are now only four points off a promotion spot in 4th. Last week they took their chances as they defeated Burton Cons C 6-2 away. Star man for Stapenhill was Steve Ford who knocked in a 32 on the way to beating Cons’ captain Ian Shrive. Mark Waldron also won for The Institute against Matt Hucker who is still short of table time. Jason Spibey drew with Tom Egginton whilst Carl Jeffcoate also halved with Lee Louch. Staepnhill’s cause has not been helped by having 4 draws in the space of 5 games. The Cons have won only once in their last 8 league matches and seem to reserve their better performances for the cup having made the President’s Cup semi finals and already having beaten Premier opposition in the Orme Plate.
Newhall A missed the chance to get closer to the third spot after being beaten 5-3 at home by Rolleston C. John Brentnall made the difference for The Rollers as he defeated Nick Trayford. the other 3 matches were all halved – Carl Glover, Martin Hurdman and Mark Anslow all scoring one for Newhall and Wayne Smith, Tom Lucas and Billy Ashton for Rolleston. Newhall has only won one of its last 6 whilst this was only Rolleston’s second win in their last 8.
Woodville A has won just the once all season and look destined to return to Division Two after just one season. Last week they lost 5-3 at SDSC D. Ryan Gilmore and Andy Bloor were on target for the Swad side. Brain Bloor and Alan Orpwood shared their two frames whilst Tony Coleman made the scoreline respectable with a 2-0 win over Garton Bloor. This result has pulled SDSC D above Stapenhill B and the drop-zone end of the division.
It’s also looking a little bleak for Rolleston B who are now one off the bottom after suffering a 6-2 home beating by SDSC C, who have done their own chances of survival no harm at all. Nick Harcombe wins most weeks for the Swad Snooker Centre team and last week was no exception as he defeated Lionel Lewis.Ray Bancroft was also in good form as he beat Kev Norris whilst Ray Stretton and Matt Tewkesbury also avoided defeat by drawing with John Harvey and Rob Sanders.This was Rolleston’s first defeat in six in all competitions whilst this was SDSC C’s first win in seven.
At this stage of the season Wayne Pereira leads the averages for the division with an impressive 22 wins from 24 played. Nick Harcombe is in second with a number of others still in good positions to make the end of season Ken Shipton Memorial Tournament. Adam McNulty leads the break table with 56 but has now transferred to Belmont A in the Premier Division after a written request was ratified by the Committee. There has been a total of 36 breaks in excess of thirty and 25 players with an average over 50%.
Newton Fallowell Division 2 by Kate Stirling
Week 16 in division 2 was certainly not a great one for the underdogs as all ties saw top half teams win! With the exception of one draw this week as second place Tutbury C played host to Woodville B. A two nil win for Dennis Moore puts him in 7th place in the individual averages and Paul Atterbury clinched his match against Wayne Allen to shoot into 14th ont eh leader-board. The teams shared the point on the night and now second placed Tutbury are now a staggering 22 points adrift from the Woodville ‘wonderboys’ who took on Burton Cons at home. Paul Brooks secured a draw for the visitors against Wayne Brewin but no whitewash was the only consolation as they lost 7-1 and dropped to 7th place!
Spot On’s Snookettes travelled to their second home – Belmont Club and took on their mighty C team. Some excellent clashes on the night saw spot on walk away with just 2 frames which were both clinched by skipper Kate Stirling.
The final tie this week was between club-mates at Swad cons as the C and D teams went into battle. Gaz Ward, Andy Boam and Bob Birch were all in fine form to clinch wins on the night whilst Dave Bodie settled for a draw against Jon Petcher who, once again, saved the whitewash!
