David Wain Insurance Premier League

In the opening week of the new snooker season, the David Wain Insurance Premier Division saw last season’s protagonists flex their muscles straight from the off. Champions for the past ten seasons, Burton Cons A opened up with a maximum against Tutbury A – 8-0 to the home side. Graham Stevens beat Dave Mabbutt. Mike Buckland won the first against Steve Mabbutt on the black and won the second comfortably including a 33 along the way. John Shilton had too much for Dan Mabbutt knocking in a nice 36 although Dan did have a chance to win the second. Darren Coady saw off Steve Mabbutt knocking in a 30 as he did it. Steve can count himself unluckiy not to have halved though.

Ivanhoe A thumped Spot On B 7-1.Ian Rennocks played Lee Cooke, having a 33 in the first and 30 in the second, whilst lee couldn’t get going.Andy Marriott played Steve Lane and carried on from where he left off last season with breaks of 41 and 34.Ant Moore played Steve Butterworth, knocking in a 32 in each frame plus a few 20+,Steve leaving it too late to get going. Loz Kennerson had a nice 33 in the first versus Dan Blunn to save Spot On’s blushes with Dan battling back well to win the second.

Belmont A opened up with a comfortable 6-2 win over SDSC A. There were wins for John Chambers and Ian Archer whilst the games between Dean Marriott and Andy Goldingay and then Rob Chambers and Chris Dewey ended all square.

Burton Cons B also started with a 6-2 triumph-over Tutbury , who were only able to field 3 with Stuart Roberts scoring the easiest of starts to the season. Simon Smith showed no signs of rust as he dispatched Daz Lester. The games between Alan Davies and Jon Swift and then Jan Pawlazcyk and Owen Jones were shared.

Over at Swad Snooker Centre, the newly promoted B team got off to a good start with a 5-3 win over Swad Cons A, although there were several close frames.Henry Tomas was just too strong for Jim Wright, having a nice 28 in there. Adam Harrison and Mark Hadley shared two close games whilst the Snooker Centre welcomed Rich Hinks back into the fold with a fair draw with Paul Slater.Andy Grainger of the Cons and Ben Davies shared the other match one across.

Rolleston A had a terrific start to the season winning 5-3 away at Spot On A. Mark Press was man of the match knocking in a 35 on the way to beating Andy Spiers. Joe Docksey also started the season well with a good win over Tom Elliott. Rich O’Dell drew with Mark Stirling whilst Ade Harper responded for Spot On with a win over Bobby Cliff.

PJM Fascias Division One

In the PJM Fascias Division One,there was a good opening 6-2 win from Alrewas B over a talented Woodville side. Ian Hiley got past Mark Satchwell in two close frames. The first on the black after even after gifting Satchwell a way back into it with two snookers required. The second on the pink but Hiley was always ahead. Adam Walton played well to beat John Chambers but the result was never in doubt. Carl Poulton potted some nice balls in the late stages of both frames to ease past Fran McInulty. Wayne Brewin recovered some pride for the Woodvillians knocking in an excellent 40 on his way to a comfortable win over James Edwards.

Burton Cons C have some new players this term and it was one of them who came away with both frames in Bill Davidson. However Ivanhoe C, with Mick Kirk in their side, ran out 5-3 winners with Kirk and also Daz Wilson winning. Gaz Dolman and Ian Shrive drew to complete the scoring.
Newhall A and Belmont B drew their match 4-4-both sides with new line ups this year. John Finch and Martin Hicks scoring twice for Newhall with Micky Morris and Brett Craddock for Belmont .
Spot On C made a cracking start to the season with a splendid 7-1 win over Tutbury D. Trevor Heath rolled in a nice 34 and won alongside Andy Jenkins and John Hardy. Jeff Siddalls spared the Tutters’ blushes taking a frame off of Tony Clements

Tutbury C started their attack on promotion to the Premier with a good 6-2 win over Stapenhill A. Wayne Smith won the first on the pink against Callum Coleman. Smith then found some form knocking a 25 in the second. Tom Lucas won his first against Jason Spiby despite Jason having a 25. Tom won the 2nd by over 50 points having knocked a good 27 in. Steve Burrows potted well to defeat Dave Shenton in the first with Dave winning a scrappy second. Steve Butler scored a lovely 33 in his first v Andy Gretton who responded by taking a tight second frame on the black.

Newton Fallowell Division Two

In The Newton Fallowell Division Two, Woodville B opened up with a narrow 5-3 win over Swad Cons C. Bob “Baby Face” Brooks was unlucky to lose the first frame to Bob “The Exterminator” Birch, who could have lost the first if Baby Face had potted a pink to the middle.The Exterminator was in clinical form to easily take the second. Alan “Big O” Orpwood potted well in making a couple of teen breaks in beating Andy Boam. Andy potted some lovely balls from range but couldn’t follow it up on the colours. Pat “The Door” Ryan and Jon Petcher shared two frames-Pat knocking in some nice balls to win on the early colours. He was in control in the second but left the door open for Jon who duly accepted. Tony Coleman got the two frames for the win against Kieron Dadley winning on the pink and blue respectively. Tony did try to throw one frame away rolling up behind the blue when had clearly nod had the requisite number of Weetabix that morning.
The Snookerettes of Spot On D opened up with a hard fought draw against Rolleston B. Rob Tubey beat Clare Peaty and Rob Sanders drew with Gilda Horvath to put the Rollers 3-1 up at the interval. Yvonne Spenlove threw a nice 21 in during her draw with Kev Norris. Kate Stirling won her two frames against Mark Bennett to salvage the half for the ladies.

Belmont C and SDSC D shared their 8 frames-winners on the night being Dave Press and Brian Cutting for Belmont and the Bloors, Andrew and Garton, for Swad Snooker Centre.

Ivanhoe D squeezed past Burton Cons D after 3 matches ended up all squre and Tony Tredger providing the difference with his two frames worth 3 after beating Ian Protheroe.

Stapenhill B having been relegated last term, showed they they are in the mood for an immediate return to Division One with a thumping 7-1 win over Rolleston C.Andy Tomlinson, Bryan Sharratt and Greg Britton were all on target for the Institute whilst Aaron Doyle was the sole scorer for The Rollers in his draw with Tim Knopik.

Spot On E showed they will be a force to be reckoned with after defeating Woodville C 7-1.Jared Cronje scored the highest break of the week throughout all 3 divisions with a cracking 47 on the way to his win. he was backed up by Kyle Cope and Ben Menzies. Dennis Moore was the only scorer for Woodville in his draw with Ryan Gibbs.
