2017-18: Week 2

Reports by Mick Buckland

David Wain Insurance Premier League

Belmont A put down a marker in the David Wain Insurance Premier Division with an impressive 8-0 dispatching of  a hopeful Alrewas A side. John Chambers was the star man including a nice 50 clearanceon the way to beat Karl Hancox 2-0 on his own patch, a rare feat in itself. John just did not give a chance to Karl. John Richardson’s 40 was not enough to stop the ever reliable Ian Archer notching his second win of the season. There were also wins for Josh Gebbie and Rob Chambers to leave Belmont with 16 points after two games. Rob played particurlarly nicely around the black with Tom Smith having some bad run, whilst Josh smashed balls in from everywhere in an impressive performance.

An early season clash between the top two for the past few seasons saw Burton Cons A run out 6-2 winners, a feat they were unable to achieve last term. John Shilton beat Andy Marriott 2-0 including breaks of 40 and 39. Andy was somewhat out of sorts but sportingly called a foul on himself when in the balls which no-one else had seen so fair play to him.Ant Moore won the first at ease against Graham Stevens who bounced back nicely to secure a draw and it was a similar story on the other table as Ian Rennocks knocked a good 31 in during the first versus Mike Buckland only for Buckland to ease to a win in the second. Darren Coady, whilst not at his best, did enough to get past Dan Blunn in the final exchange.
The only other unbeaten side after 2 games is Burton Cons B. They eased to a 6-2 victory away at Tutbury A. Stuart Roberts put up a solid performance of potting and safety as he was always in control against Steve Hathaway. Jon Swift hardly missed a ball in the first frame against Steve Mabbutt but the Tutbury man came back strongly to take the second. Simon Smith won both versus Dave Mabbutt with some good potting although the second was won on the black ball. Chris Mabbutt and Owen Jones shared their two frames -Chris winning a tight first frame on the pink and Jones clearing with a lovely 41 to take the second.
Tutbury B beat Rolleston A 5-3 in a tight encounter away from home. Ant Rushton was a winner for The Rollers but their only other point came from Mark Press in his draw with Daz Lester. Wins from Jan Pawlazcyk and Wayne Pereira saw the Tutters home.
SDSC A took on Spot On A and it was on of those rare occasions where the match ended 4-4 with all four games drawn. John Davis provided the highlight with a nice 35 in his draw with Ade Harper.
Spot On B slipped past SDSC B by a 5-3 scoreline. Loz Kennerson was man of the match knocking in runs of 54 and 31 in his win over Rich Hinks. Steve Butterworth was also a winner for Spot On. The game between Lee Cooke and Adam Harrison ended all square whilst the only winner for the Snooker Centre was Henry Tomas

PJM Fascias Division One

In the PJM Fascias Division One, Belmont B ran out easy winners against a poor Alrewas B side. Micky Morris played some canny snooker to out-wit Ian Hiley comfortably in both frames. Shaun Gebbie dispatched Carl Poulton with some good potting, hardly breaking sweat as Carl could not get going. Zaheer Hussain put in the performance of the evening, rolling in a lovely 45 alongside some other breaks to easily beat James Edwards. The only high spot for Alrewas came with Adam Walton’s win over Mark Vaughan.
Tutbury C showed that they are u[p there with a shout at promotion after thumping Burton Cons C 7-1. Steve Burrowas was a bit hit and miss in his win over Tom Egginton but knocked in a nice 25 clearance along the way. Wayne Smith just about beat Brian Huckerby in two scrappy frames. Tom Lucas and Bill Davidson shared their two frames whilst man of the match was Steve Butler who rolled in breaks of 36 and 35 in his win over the Cons’ captain Ian Shrive.
Ivanhoe C had an impressive 6-2 win over a new look Newhall A side. There were wins for Gaz Dolman and Mick Kirk. Kirk knocking in  a good 32. Jerry Cook and John Finch halved as did Steve Cockeram and Martin Hicks.
Spot On C went to The institute at Stapenhill and came away with the winning point scraping in by a 5-3 scoreline. Andy Jenkins was the man of the night as he scored a win as all 3 other encounters were halved – the highlight coming via a nice 31 from Steve Gaunt.
Ivanhoe B beat Tutbury D 5-3 with wins for Jason Pickering and Bren Mattley.Paul Atterbury replied for the Tutters. Adam Pickering and Colin Bell shared theit two frames.

Newton Fallowell Division Two

In the Newton Fallowell Division Two, the early season pace setters are Spot On E who followed up their opening week 7-1 win with a 8-0 whitewash over Rolleston B. Jared Cronje, Ben Menzies, Kyle Cope and Tim Horvath all had too much for their respective opponents.
The rare occurence of a fifty plus break in Division two happened at Swad Snooker Centre as Andy Bloor of the club’s D team rolled in a lovely 53 in his draw with Tony Tredger of Ivanhoe D. Andy Rice and Matt Tewkesbury also drew whilst their were wins for David Wain and Ross Tredger leaving the sore all square.
Burton Cons D went down 5-3 at home to Stapenhill B. Colin Britton and Andy Tomlinson were the winners for the away side whilst ian Protheroe was on target for the Cons. The game between Al Munnien and Greg Britton was halved.
Swad Cons C scraped past Belmont C by 5 games to 3. Gaz Ward made the difference on the night as he won with all three other games shared.
Woodville C and Rolleston C shared the spoils at The Snooker and Social Club. One win for each team with Denis Moore for Woodville and Aaron Doyle for Rolleston. Mark Gallagher and Mark Storr drew with Storr knocking in a 23.  Wayne Allen and Neal Cheadle also halved.
