By Mick Buckland

In the David Wain Insurance Premier Division, Ivanhoe A won the season’s Tuesday fixture for them, going to Tutbury C and coming away 7-1 winners and putting down a marker at the top. Andy Marriott continued his excellent form by making runs of 50 and 33 as he dispatched Tom Lucas with no difficulty. Steve Burrows provided the Tutters’ evening’s highlight as he rolled in a nice 32 to earn himself the home side’s only point in his draw with Ian Rennocks. Ian, for his part though, knocked in the season’s highest break so far-a fantastic effort of 80. Daniel Blunn got in on the potting act, knocking in a lovely 38 in his win over Steve Butler, whilst Ant Moore completed the scoring with a 2-0 success over Wayne Smith. The result brings the Ashby side within 6 of the top, whilst Tutbury are 5 points from safety.

The previous week Alrewas A had been unlucky not to have come away with more than a draw away at Burton Cons A. Last week though they were undone 7-1 on their own tables by The Cons B team. The Legionnaires were always in trouble after their talisman Karl Hancox was beaten by a resurgent John Shilton who included a 37 along the way. Darren Coady, for The Cons, was also too good on the night for John Richardson. The only respite for the home side was the point Lee Louch secured in his draw with Simon Smith. Troy Randle completed the away team’s scoring with a comfortable success over Thom Smith. The result means Burton Cons B leapfrog Alrewas and put themselves within 12 points of the top with a game in hand.

Belmont A kept themselves in contention at the top with a hard fought 5-3 win away at Newhall A. With the Chambers brothers away on international pool duties, Brett Bailey stepped in and notched a nice 33 in his victory over the home sides Carl Glover. Newhall’s Martin Hurdman fought well to earn a half in his encounter with Rich Goldby. After the break Callum Coleman scored a nice run of 30 but this only earned him a draw with Mark Sherratt, whilst Nick Walker and Owen Jones also shared the spoils, leaving Newhall three points above the drop-zone and Belmont 7 points from the summit.

Burton Cons A won 5-3 for the 7th time this season as they scraped past a battling Spot On A side. Mike Buckland had a nice 30 before mis-cueing when trying to split the pack off the black in his first against Ade Harper. Ade battled well and after some poor run looked like he would take the second but Buckland knocked in a difficult long green and cleared up for a 2-0 victory. Jon Swift and James Foy had a ding-dong battle with both players missing chances until Swift fluked the blue and couldn’t miss the pink to take the first. the second was also tight but Foy snatched it to keep the Spots in the match. Graham Stevens ran away from Andy Speirs in both frames with an imperious display of potting-knocking in efforts of 65 and 54 to seal the match for the home side. Nige Tomlinson had the surprise result of the night as he beat the Cons’ Jon Fletcher who was off form. Nige rolled in a nice 34 along the way and cued really nicely to be deserving of the victory..
Zaheer Hussein was man of the match for Belmont B as they won for the first time this season with a 5-3 triumph over SDSC A. He gained the evening’s only win against one of the players of the season so far, Harry Farrell, with both players cracking in breaks of 38. Graham Bailey had three runs in the 20s as he drew his clash with Henry Tomas. Mark Satchwell for Belmont and Rich Hinks also traded thirties as they halved their match-mark just pipping Rich with a 32 to a 31. Josh Gebbie also had a 31 but this was only enough for a share with Ben Davies. Both sides are in the bottom three but there are a lot of frames between now and the end of the season.

Swad Cons A were held 4-4 at home by Tutbury A. It was 2-2 at half time as both matches were drawn-Lee Wood for the Cons with Chris Mabbutt and a surprise half between Andy Grainger and Daniel Mabbutt, making a rare appearance. In the second half Simon Orpwood overcame John Brentnall whilst Dave Mabbutt for the Tutters had the highlight of the evening with a 36 in his win over Simon Mansfield.

In the PJM Fascias Division One, Stapenhill B scored one of the victories of the night as they demolished SDSC C 7-1. Greg Britton, Bryan Sharratt and Rob Kent were all in fine form to secure doubles whilst David Wain scored the Snooker Centre’s only point in his draw with Simon Piechowicz. There are only three points separating Stapenhill A in third and their B side in 8th.

Ivanhoe B kept themselves in with a promotion challenge but they were held 4-4 at home by Burton Cons C, who manged to secure halves in all four matches. Nick Sewell and Greg Gallup in the first half for the Ashby side with Bill Davidson and Greg Read. The second half pairings were also not to be separated as the games between Josh Wright and The Cons’ Vince Draper and then Bran Mattley and Ian Shrive also ended all square.

Rolleston A’s ninth fixture of the season now means they have a 3-3-3 record. This came courtesy of an impressive 6-2 away victory at Alrewas C-their first defeat of the season. Tom Bassett and Bobby Cliff were the men to the damage as they got past Steve Butterworth and Loz Kennerson. The home sides blushes were spared by Steve Lane and Lee Cooke, although both were only able to score draws with Mark press and Rich O’Dell.

Ivanhoe C cemented their position at the top with a thumping 7-1 win away at Rolleston B. Gaz Dolman and daz Wilson both had nice runs of 24 as they both secured victories. Also on the winner’s podium was Graham Measures as he beat Rob Sanders. Kev Norris scored the Rollers’ only point as he took one off Steve Cockeram.

Stapenhill A are in third after they drew with SDSC A 4-4 at The Snooker Centre. Both sides had two winners on the night-John Davis and Steve Ayre for the home side and Chris Sheldrake and Steve Ford for the Institute.

Spot On B secured their first win in four after they beat an in form Alrewas B. All four games were very scrappy with Tony Clements probably playing the best snooker of the night in what was ultimately the crucial game beating an out of sorts Dave Trueman. The other three ties were fairly drawn with all three seeing Spot On players taking the first with the Alrewas boys battling back to take the second. Andy Jenkins played well to beat Mick Morris in their first before Morris fought back. Trevor “The “Hit-Man” Heath potted superbly from distance to take his first against Carl Poulton before the League Secretary ground out the second. Finally John Hardy’s single ball potting meant he beat Ian Hiley at a canter in their first before Hiley did enough to keep Hardy at bay in the second.

In the Newton Fallowell Division Two, Belmont C had a fine 6-2 success over Rolleston C. Brian Cutting played nicely to get past Mark Storr, with Mark knocking in a 24 at one point-Dave Press was also a winner for The Servicemen. Terry Bosworth drew his two with Graham Fisher whilst Graeme Drayton and Steve Atkin also halved.
Tutbury D kept themselves on top and are already in a good position for another “boing-boing” season as they went away to Burton Cons D and came away 6-2 victors. Paul Atterbury and Colin Bell were the men in form as they both scored doubles with the other two matches halved. Tom Egginton, for the Cons, with Dave Brady and Greg Hall with Ian Day.
Spot On E made it four wins on the bounce as they dispatched hitherto unbeaten SDSC D 7-1. Luke Allsopp, James Bailey and Dave Goldsmith all rolled in 20+ efforts with the highlight being the win for James Bailey over Nick Harcombe, who lost his first frames of the season. The Snooker Centre’s only point was picked up by Ray Bancroft in his draw with Marvin Walker.
After a slow start to the season, Woodville A picked up their second win in three weeks as they beat Belmont D 5-3. Arron Vaughan’s Premier Division experience was enough to see him score two for the Belmont side as he beat Billy Bob Brooks. Daz Scott and Pat Ryan saw the Woodvillians into a commanding position , both winning nicely before Tony Coleman knocked in a lovely 28 to secure a draw in his encounter with Ian Gibson and the overall win.
The Spot On ladies are struggling this season-playing some nice snooker but not getting the results to show for it. Last week, they were undone 7-1 at home by Woodville B. Mark Gallagher, Denis Moore and Bill Hunt all had too much on the night, all scoring wins. Yvonne Lawrence saved the whitewash as she took one off Gary Green .
Swad Cons B made it three wins from four after they beat Stapenhill C 5-3. Gaz Ward’s 26 and Bob Birch’s 22 were enough to see them both win against Gordon Jennings and Neil Bourne respectively. Tim Knopik kept The Institute in the match with a win of his own whilst the game between Andy Boam and Paul Stewart was halved .
