2019-20: Week 8

In the PJM Fascias Premier Division, the big game was played at Ashby, where Ivanhoe A drew four across against Burton Cons A. Dan Blunn and Owen Jones drew theirs, whilst Graham Stevens included runs of 38 and 43 in defeating Guy Fraser in the first half. After the break, Jon Fletcher also had a 43 but was only able to draw with Ant Moore. Ian Rennocks beat an out of sorts Mick Simpkins as Ivanhoe fought back to claim the draw.

A struggling Alrewas C were well beaten by Burton Cons C on a soaking night at the Royal British Legion. Ian Hiley couldn’t recover his form in time and lost both frames to a solid performance by Lee Wood. The second frame was lost going in-off on the final black. Dave Trueman battled manfully against Andy Grainger but in both frames Andy just did enough to take them both on the final few colours. Carl Poulton potted a fine long final black to take the first against Mark Hadley and should have taken the second only to see the white spin away into the middle bag after potting the final blue from which Hadley cleared up to win. Micky Morris never got going against a competent Ant Rushton. Rushton took the first after some good potting but kindly run, however, the second was a stroll.

Reigning champions Belmont were surprisingly held to a draw by a resurgent Ivanhoe B, without a win all season.Brett Bailey had the match’s high break with a cracking 60 but Gaz Dolman of Ashby hung in for a half. Belmont’s only winner was Mark Sherratt, who had runs of 43 and 35 in defeating Graham Measures. Steve Cockeram was on form and included a 36 in his win over the home side’s Rich Goldby to level things up. Fran McInulty and Daz Wilson were not to be separated as they drew meaning the overall score was 4-4. There was another draw at Tutbury where the A side drew with Alrewas A.

In the winners’ enclosure were Dave Mabbutt for Tutbury and Karl hancox for The Legionnaires. Top breaks of the evening were 33 from John Richardson and 32 from Lee Louch but they were only sufficient for draws with Chris Mabbutt and John Brentnall respectively. The games between Burton Cons B and Tutbury as well as SDSC A and Spot On A were postponed.

There was a surprise in the Newton Fallowell Division One, where leaders Belmont B were beaten 5-3 away at Burton Cons D. Greg Read was the man to make the difference as he scored a double over Mark Pickering. The other three games were halved-Simon Shilton with Arron Vaughan,Vince Draper with Josh Gebbie and Ian Shrive with Jay Pickering.

Belmont C drew four all with Ivanhoe C-Kyle Cope winning for Belmont and Bren Mattley for the Ashby side. Highest contribution was a good 42 by Belmont’s Brad Williams but this only got him a draw with Josh Wright. Jordan Watts and Nick Sewell also halved.

There was another draw at Rolleston where the A side halved with SDSC B. There were two wins apiece-Tom Bassett and Rich O’Dell for The Rollers and Matt Keay and Gary Holmes for The Snooker Centre.

SDSC C beat Stapenhill A 5-3 with Nick Harcombe making the difference by scoring a double, with the other 3 games halved.

Stapenhill B halved with Woodville A. Greg Britton for Stapenhill top scoring with a lovely 38 but this was enough for a draw with Steve Gaunt. There was another draw between Simon Piechowicz and Trevor Heath whilst John Sherriff won his for The Institute and Andy Jenkins for Woodville.

Ivanhoe D had a good 6-2 win in the Nicholas Humphreys Division Two against Woodville C.dave Watson played two convincing frames to defeat Billy Bob Brooks. Adam Briggs had two battles with Tony Coleman, taking the first on the black and the second by clearing the last four colours. Frank Briggs was outplayed by Alan Orpwood before Brian Lowrie somehow won his first after giving 27 away in fouls. He then went on to clear the last 4 to win both his against a flabbergasted Rich Marcer. Stablemates

Ivanhoe E also won 6-2 against Stapenhill D. Jacob Moore and Warner Collins were both victorious, whilst for the Snookerettes,Gilda Horvath and Yvonne Lawrence managed a frame apiece versus Jeff Whetton and Andy Wilson. Rolleston D had a cracking 6-2 win as well-against SDSC E. Dale Prime was man of the match as he rolled in a lovely 32 as he beat Wallace Webb. Also winning for The Rollers were Rob McMeechan and Colin Wood. Nathan Callton provided the only resistance for The Snooker Centre.

Another 6-2 win was handed out by SDSC D to Rolleston C. They showed they will be in the mix for an immediate return to Division One. Andy Bloor had a cracking 46 as he beat The Rollers’ Steve Atkin. Garton Bloor also won whilst they were halves between David Wain and Mark Storr and then Brian Bloor and Neil Cheadle.

Stapenhill C were beaten 5-3 at home by Belmont D, who are having a vastly improved season. Andy Biggadike and Brett Craddock were the men in form, both scoring doubles. Tim Knopik replied for The Institute whilst Derek Jackson and Graeme Drayton shared theirs. Swad Cons a drew four all with Spot On C-the first time they have been stopped from winning this term. Gaz Ward had 42 and 25 in his win for The Cons with Bob Birch also doubling up. In reply Mick O’Mahoney and Adam Bridges brought the scores level.

Biggest winners of the week were Rolleston B as they thumped a Woodville B side that just couldn’t get going. Only Mark Gallagher offered any resistance for Woodville, whilst Rob Tubey, Mark Press and Bobby Cliff romped to victories for The Rollers.
