2022-23: Week 8

By Mick Buckland

The top 3 sides in the Newton Fallowell Premier Division all have a 6-1-1 record but it’s Belmont A who are 3 points clear after their 6 -2 home win over Potters A. Paul Bradford had a nice 30 for the Servicemen but this only gained him one frame in his half with Henry Tomas, who battled well. The other game in the first half saw Jordan Watts get past Nick Ayres 2-0. Game of the evening in the second half was Kyle Cope versus Baz Picci – Baz having efforts of 51 and 30 against Kyle’s 37 to leave another game squared. Mark Sherratt sealed the win for Belmont with a good 2-0 win against the in-form Adam Harrison. Alrewas B are tied in second spot after beating bottom side Ivanhoe B but only by a tight 5-3 scoreline. It was 2-2 at halfway as the home side’s Nick Sewell beat Tony Wills of Alrewas, whilst Ollie Murfin for The Legion beat Andy Spendlove, who is a far better player than his results are showing. In the second half,Tim Frowd continued his imperious form to get past Josh Wright, whilst there was a half in the game between Greg Gallup and Loz Kennerson. Also in joint second are Burton Cons A, who drew 4 across with the club’s B team. Stuart Johnson for the A and Jon Swift for the B just about cancelled each other out, whilst Simon Tarrant for the B took the first before pegged back by Matt Milnes of the A for 2 each. In the second half Col Hamer for the B took both from Graham Stevens, losing his first frames of the season with Col rolling in a lovely 53. In return for the A was Darren Coady who knocked in a nice 38 along the way in his victory over Simon Shilton. In fourth spot are Ivanhoe A, who had a solid 6-2 win over Alrewas C at the RBL. James Hastie won both against a below par Lewis Parnham in two tight frames. Ryan Shreeve was in excellent form taking both from Ian Hiley with runs over 41 and 36 – Ian’s 30 of his own, not being enough to stop him. Vijay Singh of Ashby and Bill Stewart shared two entertaining frames with good pots, safeties and misses that ended up being a fair 1-1.Ant Moore and Carl Poulton also shared theirs with Poulton fighting back well in the first to take it on the black and Moore potting well in the second. Player of the week was most probably Martin Hicks of Newhall who rolled back the years with breaks of 62, 42 and 31 to steamroller Chris Mabbutt-a good player in his own right of Tutbury A. Fran McInulty took both against Dave Mabbutt with great match play. Nick Walker then took both off John Brentnall, whilst Steve Mabbutt replied for the Tutters winning both off an unfortunate Ryan Turner. Burton Cons C and Alrewas A played out a 4-4 draw on Tuesday evening. Andy Grainger rolled in a nice 44 against Karl Hancox for a fair 1-1 draw, whilst on the other table Simon Orpwood and Thom Smith also shared. Potters B lead the PJM Fascias Division One after round 8. Last week they comfortably beat Stapenhill B 6-2 at home with wins for Chris Dewey and captain Steve Ayre. There were halves in the matches between the home side’s Mark Satchwell and Kieron Carr with Simon Piechowicz and Bryan Sharratt of the Institute. Break Room A had a good 6-2 win over Burton Cons D 6-2, mainly due to wins by Nigel Tomlinson and Mark Stirling. Billy Newman drew his encounter with Greg Read of The Cons whilst there was another half between Ade Harper and Mick Morris. After an indifferent start to the season, it’s Belmont B in third after 5 straight wins. Michael Lomas got Belmont off to a good start away at Ivanhoe D scoring a nice 2-0 win against Jacob Moore with a good 30 along the way. Rich Clay, though, replied for Ivanhoe winning both frames on the pink against a poor Mark Vaughan(his words). Arron Vaughan for Belmont lost his first versus Jakub Krajewski but stormed back to take the second. Wayne Brewin was man of the match with a fantastic 76 in his match with Dave Marriott, which could have been a hundred clearance but for other tables and spectators not understanding what was going on, something for which the home side apologised. Rolleston A kept themselves in the hunt for a promotion spot with a good 5-3 away win at Stapenhill A. Tom Bassett and Joe Docksey were both in fine form knocking in six 22 plus efforts between them, Joe top scoring with a lovely 42.as they both notched wins for The Rollers. Replying for The Institute was Steve Ford, whilst the game between Chris Mehrick and Mark Press was halved. Potters F have been struggling this season and last week was no exception as they went down 6-2 at home to Ivanhoe C. Steve Gaunt was the only bright spot for The Potters, whilst wins for Gaz Dolman, Nathan Blood and Graham Measures saw the Ashby side home. Rolleston B beat Tutbury B 5-3 with man of the match Rob Tubey scoring an impressive 38 in his draw with Dave Brady, who hung on well. Jeff Siddalls had put the Tutters in front at halfway with a fine win over the home side’s Rob Sanders. In the second half though it was The Rollers’ Danny Thomson and Kev Norris who stole the show and got Rolleston over the line.

Break Room B made it 8 wins from 8 in the Nicholas Humphreys Division Two with an 8-0 whitewash of Rolleston D away. Mike Flanagan , Paul Fox, Ryan Gibbs and Callum Coleman all showed they will be playing in Division One next season. The Potters derby between the C and the D went the way of the “away side” as the C were 6-2 victors. The result keeps the C in second with wins for Brian Bloor, Andy Bloor and the magnificent David Wain who rolled in a lovely 36 in their wins. Responding for the D was Nick Harcombe who scored a good 33 in his win over Andy Rice. Spot On A maintained their challenge as their talisman Zaheer Hussain again top scored with a good 35 to win his match against Potters E’s Ashley Beard. Also in the winners’ enclosure for The Spots was Asir Kiyani. Mahtab Akram and Billy Kinson shared theirs whilst Potters’ Nigel Dutton kept the scoreline close as the Spots ran out 5-3 winners’. Ivanhoe E notched their first win of the season as they squeezed past Belmont C 5-3 at home. Craig Cox and Ronnie Middleton were the men doing the damage with only Andy Biggadike on a double for the Servicemen. The match between Warner Collins and Connor Rafferty was shared. There was a good win for The Worriers of Woodville B. They were given a great start by Rich Marcer beating Bob Birch of Swad Cons A fighting back well in the second to win it on the black. “The Big O”, Alan Orpwood, showed signs of his old form beating Paul Jones with a number of good pots. Tony Coleman and Tim Knopik shared theirs with Tony winning the first on the blue and Tim having a nice 28 in the second. Darrell, “The Coach Driver” Scott won his frame on the black against Derek Jackson, who won the other for a share of the spoils. Gary Green and Jason Large fought out a draw to leave Woodville 6 points behind their opponents but with 2 games in hand.

2022-23: Week 7

By Mike Buckland

Burton Cons A and Belmont A share top spot in the Newton Fallowell Premier Division after week 7. Ivanhoe A were narrowly beaten by Burton Cons a 5-3 at home. Dan Blunn took control early against Owen Jones, who looked a little out of sorts to start with but fought back only to lose on the colours. The second frame was pretty much the same to get Ivanhoe in front. On the other table James Hastie took on Matt Milnes in a quality encounter with both players potting well. In the first Matt missed the brown for James to nick it with a clearance on the last few balls in a steely finish. In the second, James played a loose safety to leave Matt a chance, which he duly accepted to knock in a lovely 53…leaving Ivanhoe 3-1 up at the turn. Ant Moore and Graham Stevens had a good match, with both players potting well. Graham had a touch of run to allow him a nice 31 and to pinch the frame in the first. In the second, Graham could do no wrong and had another 31 to run out the winner. The last game saw Ian Rennocks struggle against Darren Coady to allow the Cons to come away 5-3 winners. In the top of the table clash at Alrewas between The Legionnaire’s B team and Belmont A, it was the Belmont Boys who put a marker down for this year’s title with a good 5-3 away win. Player of the week was Kyle Cope who had runs of 77 and 44 in his win over Tony Wills. This was in the second half where Belmont did the damage with a win for Mark Sherratt over Loz Kennerson , including a nice 32. At halfway it was the Legionnaires who were in front after a win for Tim Frowd over Rich Goldby and a draw in the match between Ollie Murfin and Paul Bradford-Ollie having a good 34 along the way. Burton Cons B jumped up the table with a thumping whitewash against stablemates the C team. Mike Buckland beat Andy Grainger with 5 breaks of 25 or more including a top effort of 33-both players not missing much with Andy fighting back well in the first before a loose shot on the yellow proved costly. He also had bad run going in off near the end of the second gifting Mike an opportunity to clear the colours, which he duly accepted. Jon Swift had a good 2-0 win over Ant Rushton with Ant having a 30 in reply to Jon’s 37 but leaving Jon able to get over the line at the end of both frames. Col Hamer took advantage of the miss rule to squeeze past Paul Slater, who on another day might have nicked a frame if not both. Dave Shipton played some excellent safety to ease him towards a win over Simon Orpwood. Simon can count himself unlucky in the second in particular as he gave away at least 20 in fouls-most of which were unfortunate in the extreme….but Dave potted the balls when they were there. Two sides that lurch between fantastic and average met at Alrewas British Legion where the A team beat Newhall 7-1. Nick Walker was Newhall’s only scorer in a draw with the home side’s John Richardson. The other Legionnaires were on fire, in particular Lee Louch, who had runs of 42 and two of 31 in his comprehensive victory over Martin Hicks. In the second half Karl Hancox ran away with a win over Martin Hurdman including a nice knock of 32 but man of the match was Thom Smith who rolled in a cracking 55 as he dispatched Ryan Turner. Ivanhoe B avoided defeat for the first time this season as they drew 4 across at Tutbury A. The first half saw two drawn encounters between Tutbury’s Steve Mabbutt and Wayne Smith with Josh Wright and Bren Mattley from Ashby. Dave Mabbutt played nicely to beat Ivanhoe’s Andy Spendlove in the second half, whilst Nick Sewell responded for the Leicestershire side by defeating John Brentnall.

At the top of the PJM Fascias Division One this week. Potter B strengthened their lead with a cracking 7-1 win away at Ivanhoe C. Chris Dewey, Kieron Carr and Mark Satchwell were all in great from for Potters with doubles, whilst Ashby’s only respite came from Gaz Dolman in his draw with Steve Ayre, Potters’ captain, After 2 defeats in their last 3 matches, Tutbury B showed they are again a force to be reckoned with after beating favorites for the Division One title Break room A, formerly Spot On A. Tutbury won both halves 3-1 with a win for Dave Brady before the break against Billy Newman with a draw in the game between Colin Bell and Ade Harper. Ian Day was in sparkling form to roll over Nigel Tomlinson of The Break Room after the break. Jeff Siddalls and Mark Stirling were not to be separated to leave Tutbury 6-2 winners and back in with a chance of promotion. Also in with a chance of promotion are Belmont B after a 6-2 win over Rolleston B. Michael Lomas played his usual game to outclass Kev Norris with a lovely 44 helping the job along. Wayne Brewin took both versus Rob Tubey, who on another day might have nicked one, with luck ebbing and flowing. Bobby Cliff played magnificently to give Arron Vaughan no chance in their first before Arron hit a nice 35, which should have been more to leave their game all square. Mark Vaughan and Rob Sanders fought out a draw with Rob taking the first on the black before Mark hit a tremendous blue and pink to win the second. Burton Cons D made it two wins on the bounce with a good 6-2 win over Stapenhill Institute A. The men doing the business for the Cons were Greg Read, Vince Draper and Mick Morris-although Mick’s opponent Andy Gretton had the high break of the evening with a nice 31. In return was Chris Mehrick, who beat the Cons’ captain Ian Shrive.. Rolleston A are having an up and down season but last week was an up week as they beat Potters F 6-2. In the winners’ enclosure for The Rollers were Mark Press, James Wilkinson and Tom Bassett, whilst scoring a double for Potters was John Hardy. Stapenhill B fought out a dour 4-4 draw with Ivanhoe D Institute’s Stan Piechowicz and Ivanhoe’s Keith Bale both scoring wins. The Institute’s Greg Britton and Rob Kent halved with Jacub Krajweski and Richard Clay respectively to leave the game unsettled.

In the Nicholas Humphreys Division Two, Break room B are looking like they have the title sewed up already. Last week they didn’t have it all their own way against Woodville A though. Denis Moore and Steve Ivey managed to nick a frame each against Callum Coleman and Ryan Gibbs. There were victories however for the home side’s Mike Flanagan and Paul Fox to see the Breaks 6-2 winners. Potters C are in second with a 6-2 win over Ivanhoe E helping their cause along. The men in form were David Wain, who is outperforming his beloved Chelsea FC, and the Bloors, Andy and Brian. Frank Briggs stopped the rot for the Ashby side with a double of his own against Rob Press. Spot On A are looking good for promotion after defeating Belmont C 5-3 away. Mahtab Akram and Qasim Mohammed were on fire to score doubles with Zaheer Hussain unusually dropping a frame to secure the victory. Belmont’s Matt Newbold was in fine form to notch a win for the Servicemen in return. Potter E are not far behind and enjoyed a 5-3 win over Rolleston D last week. Nigel Dutton and Billy Kinson were on form to score doubles with a point from Jezz White against The Rollers’ Colin Wood getting the Potters over the line. Alan Davies ground out a 2-0 win for the away side to leave Potters E in 5th spot. Rolleston C rolled over Woodville B 6-2 with wins for Neal Cheadle over Rich Marcer, Aaron Doyle over Alan “The Chancellor” Orpwood and Graham Fisher over Daz “The Long Pot ” Scott. Tony Coleman, the self styled Angry Man, replied for the Woodvillains with a win over Steve Atkin of the Rollers. Potter D are in fourth after beating Swad Cons A 6-2 away. There were wins for Nick Harcombe, Andy Jeffries and Ray Stretton of Potters, whilst the man in form for The Cons was Derek Jackson with a win over Ray Bancroft.

2022-23: Week 6

by Mike Buckland

Alrewas B went to the top of the Newton Fallowell Premier Division with an emphatic 7-1 at their stablemates Alrewas C. Tim Frowd was again in excellent form as he rolled over the home side’s Lewis Parnham with breaks of 51 and 43 along the way. Ollie Murfin included a nice 34 as he beat Wayne Pereira, whilst Tony wills beat Carl Poulton. The only highlight for the C was the frame Dave Trueman took off Ben Mole.

Burton Cons A scored two wins in a week catching up on a postponed fixture against Belmont A and winning 5-3. Graham Stevens was man ofthe match as he included runs of 42 and 33 beating Rich Goldby. In their regular fixture they defeated Potters A by the same scoreline. There was a high quality encounter between Matt Milnes of the Cons and Potters’ Baz Picci as they traded breaks of 38 and 40 before the Cons’man came out on top. Adam Harrison continued his fine form as he took two off Stuart Johnson of the Cons, whilst Graham Stevens strolled past Henry Tomas. Also a point behind are Belmont A, who breezed past Ivanhoe B in Ashby 7-1. Mark Sherratt with a 55 and Paul Bradford with a 47 were in greatform as they scored doubles along with Kyle Cope. Sparing the Ashby boys’ blushes was Nick Sewell who took one off Rich Goldby to save the whitewash.

Another side winning 7-1 was Newhall. In the second half Martin Hicks beat Mike Buckland in two tight frames, Martin winning the second on the black, with Mike not making the most of a couple of decent chances. Martin Hurdman beat Dave Shipton, who is still short of match fitness after 5 years out, to round off a tremendous win for the Social Club.

On Tuesday Ivanhoe A went to Burton Cons C and came away 6-2 winners. Andy Grainger beat Ant Moore 2-0 after Andy got off to a flyer-Antfought back but just fell short on the colours in the first before Andy potted well in the second for a deserved victory. Dan Blunn showed some good potting and positional play as he beat Simon Mansfield in their first. The second was a tight affair with both players producing some excellent safety before Dan potted the pink toleave it 2-2 at the turn. Ryan Shreeve played Simon Orpwood in a good match, with both players potting well before an excellent safety on the pink produced the win for Ryan. This was a bit of a turning point as then Ryan played the better snooker in the second for a 2-0 win. VJ Patel potted well to defeat Paul Slater in the first frame of the last match and despite Paul playing well, he missed the final blue to leave Ivanhoe 6-2 winners in a very hard fought game.

Alrewas A made it two wins on the bounce as they went to Tutbury A and came away 5-3 winners. Thom Smith top scored with a nice 35 as he beat the home side’s Wayne Smith. Tutbury B, who had started the season so well were undone in dramatic style by Stapenhill A, who recorded an 8-0 whitewash. Andy Gretton top scored with a nice 35 in his win over Ian Day, whilst there were also wins for The Institute’s Steve Ford, Chris Mehrick and Steve Brimley.

2022-23: Week 5

By Mike Buckland

There was a top of the table clash last Tuesday in the Newton Fallowell Premier Division when Alrewas B took on Burton Cons A. Alrewas were struggling to raise a side, so drafted in two floaters in Lee Louch and John Richardson. Lee knocked a nice 31 in as he drew with the Cons’ Owen Jones, whilst John earned a highly creditable draw with John Shilton, who had a 32 along the way. In the second half Tony Wills and Matt Milnes shared theirs before Loz Kennerson defeated Stuart Johnson, leaving the Legionnaires 5-3 winners and top of the league.

It was a bad week for Burton Cons as both their B and C teams also lost. The B were undone 6-2 on their own patch by a spirited Tutbury A side, earning their first win of the season. Wayne Smith was drafted in and drew one each with Mike Buckland, who had a thirty in frame two-Wayne knocking in a worldy blue to win the first. On the other table Dave Shipton played his first league match for 5 years for the Cons but he was unable to keep up with the steady potting of the Tutters’ John Brentnall. In the second half, there was an extraordinary game between Dave Mabbutt and Col Hamer. It was one across in a high quality game but the outcome of each frame was pretty much decided by each player being the beneficiary of extra points because of the miss rule. Col also managed to play a free ball when one wasn’t an option but he did have efforts of 33 and 31 in a good match. There was a turgid affair in the last game as Chris Mabbutt just about got over the line against Jon Swift to leave the away side victorious.

Potters A were the team to take down Burton Cons C. Phil Dayton continued his fine form as he rolled in a lovely 40, and the highest break of the week, in beating Andy Grainger. Neil Orton of Potters drew one each with Simon Orpwood and then Henry Tomas beat the Cons’ Simon Mansfield. Pete Maguire, the Potters’ captain, made his first start of the season and managed to nick a frame off Ant Rushton to leave the home side 6-2 winners.

Belmont A showed that they will be delivering a challenge for the title this year by beating Alrewas C 6-2. It was two each at halfway though as Paul Bradford took down Carl Poulton. On the other table Wayne Pereira rolled in efforts of 34 and 27 to defeat Rich Goldby. In the second half, newly crowned double world pool champion Kyle Cope was too strong for Dave Trueman as was Mark Sherratt for Ian Hiley.

Ivanhoe A beat Newhall 6-2. First up for Ivanhoe was Ryan Shreeve against Ryan Turner. It was Ivanhoe’s Ryan that looked too strong from the start potting some good balls and tight safety to take the first frame. The second was a similar affair in which Shreeve knocked in a nice 36. Ant Moore took on Martin Hicks on the other table. Martin struggled to get a foot in as he kept leaving chances for Ant, which he eventually took to take the first. Ant started the second strongly with a nice 31 – Martin grew into the game but just a little late as Ant won 2-0, leaving the Ashby side 4-0 up at the turn. Dan Blunn then played Nick Walker in two very tight frames, with Nick pinching both frames on the last few balls. Last up was VJ Singh and Fran McInulty. VJ started well getting into a good lead, before Fran fought back after some good safety only to miss the pink and leave VJ the winner in the first before Fran couldn’t get going in the second leaving Ivanhoe 6-2 winners.

Sitting pretty at the top of the PJM Fascias Division One is break Room A who beat Stapenhill A 6-2. On form for the Breaks boys were Ade Harper and Nigel Tomlinson, who both scored wins-Nigel knocking in an evening high break of 32. Mark Stirling drew with the Institute’s Andy Gretton, whilst there was another half between Adam Edwards and Steve Ford.

In second place and enjoying a great start to the season are Tutbury B. Last week they squeezed past Potters F 5-3. It was two across at halfway as the Tutters’ captain John Peto went down 2-0 to Potters’ Mike Smith, whilst on the other table, Ian Day beat John Hardy. After half-time there was a draw between Dave Brady and Steve Gaunt, leaving Colin Bell to make the difference as he got past Potters’ Rich Turner, making it 9 frames out of 10 for the Tutbury man this season.

There was an impressive 7-1 win for Belmont B away at Ivanhoe C. Michael Lomas, for Belmont potted solidly to give himself a 2-0 victory over Geoff Whetton, whilst Wayne Brewin played nicely and knocked in a 37 out of nowhere to beat Darren Wilson to leave it 4-0 at half time to The Servicemen. Mark Vaughan was on form, rolling in 26 and 22 to get past Graham Measures. Arron Vaughan somehow managed to contrive to lose the first against Nathan Blood on the black after missing a blue he felt he should have got. In the second though he rolled in a 37 to leave Belmont 7-1 winners and beginning to mount a promotion push.

Rich Odell and Joe Docksey put Rolleston A 4-0 up at halfway in their encounter with Ivanhoe D. Jacob Moore hit back for the Ashby side with a win over the Rollers’ James Rowland. It was the frame that Tom Bassett earned over Ashby’s Keith Bale that saw them over the line and into fifth place.

Just one place ahead of them are the club’s B team who defeated Stapenhill B 5-3 away. It was honours even at the halfway point with draws between Greg Britton and Rob Tubey and then Simon Piechovicz and Danny Thompson. It was Rob Sanders who made the difference scoring a double, including two runs of 25 as he brushed past Bryan Sharratt. The other table saw another half between Rob Kent and Kev Norris. Burton Cons D made it three draws on the bounce in the league as they halved their match with Potters B. Vince Draper was a winner on the night for Cons whilst Kieron Carr returned the compliment for Potters. There were halves played out between Bill Davidson for the Cons and Steve Ayre and then Ian Shrive and Mark Satchwell.

Man of the match was Jason Spibey as he rolled in three decent 20 plus breaks in getting past Belmont’s Ian Gibson. Also in the winners’ enclosure was Mike Flanagan who beat Brett Craddock. Elsewhere there were halves between Andy Biggadike, who had a nice 34, in his game with Callum Coleman and then Connor Rafferty who shared his two with Paul Fox.

Spot On A sit in second after they beat Swad Cons A 5-3. The damage was done in the first half with comfortable wins for Mahtab Akram and Zaheer Hussain, who is on fire this year with 10 out of 10 so far. The Cons won the second half after a win for Derek Jackson and a half for Tim Knopik with Asip Kiyani.

Potters C continue to challenge at the top end after they beat Rolleston D 6-2. Andrew Bloor was in fine potting form with 4 twenty plus breaks as he beat The Rollers’ Denis Eyden. David Wain was also in good nick as he scored a win over Matt Pughsley. Brian Bloor drew with John West and Andy Rice shared his two with Colin Wood to leave the Potters victorious.

Rolleston C drew 4-4 at home to Ivanhoe C with Adam Briggs and Warner Collins knocking them in off the lampshades for the Ashby side. Neil Cheadle and Jason Large returned the favour for the Rollers to leave honours even.

Potters D went to Woodville B and came away 6-2 winners. There were wins for Nick Harcombe against Rich “Curry Boy” Marcer and also Bob McInulty against Daz “Sparky” Scott. Potters E scored a 5-3 win over Woodville A with wins for Jezz White and Billy Kinson. Steve Ivey was in fine form to score a win for Woodville whilst there was a half in the match between Nigel Dutton and Mark Gallagher to leave Potters the winners and in fourth spot.

2022-23: Week 4

By Mike Buckland

It was a return to league action after cup week the previous one. In the Newton Fallowell Premier Division, the big winners were Alrewas A who dispatched Burton Cons B 6-2. Karl Hancox and Mike Buckland shared their two after Mike got off to a flyer with a 32 second visit, with a draw being the right result. On the other table there was a drawn out affair between Jon Swift of the Cons and the home side’s John Richardson. It was the Alrewas man who prevailed after winning the second on a re-spot. Man of the match was undoubtedly Lee Louch who emphatically beat Mark Swift with runs of 62, 38 and 32-with Lee just running slightly out of position with 2 reds left of the 62. Simon Tarrant then won the first for Cons against Thom Smith but roles were reversed to leave a draw after the second to take Alrewas into mid-table.

Ivanhoe A came out on top in a close encounter away at Tutbury A. Steve Hathaway and Ryan Shreeve opened up, – the match started slowly with both players missing chances before Ryan took it for Ivanhoe at the end. He then found some form with efforts of 30 and 31 in the second to run out the winner.Steve Mabbutt took on Daniel Blunn on the other table, with Dan taking the first with some nice potting.
